Baby Steps

Have you ever watched a baby learn to walk? They roll over for a few days then they start to crawl for a while then one day the pull themselves up on a table and stand up. They are wobble and usually have a grin on their face because they know they have accomplished something...Then they take that first step or two and end up falling down. Sometimes they cry sometimes the laugh and go again...But bottom line is that they all learn to walk eventually...

Getting in shape is the same thing. Baby steps. A Baby does it in small spurts, only on rare occasions do they get up one day and start walking. It just does not happen that way, so why should we expect that a new nutrition and exercise plan should be any different. You will usually not master it the first day. You certainly won't lose all of your fat in one day...But that's what some expect anyway!!

The Challenge gets tough about week 4-6. It is tougher for those who want the instant gratification of what a challenge can do for you. They start by running as hard as thet can, not realizing that this is a lifelong process. They falter, beat themselves up, then either quit or go try something else. They refuse to go at it at a reasonable pace. Even if they reach their goal weight it won't last because they have pushed themselves to exhaustion.

Challenges are won by those who do the work and see it is a process for a lifetime. It's baby steps, falling down, getting back up. It's learning to pace yourself, do the inner strengthening, and knowing that you have a long time to learn to do it all right.

It took me over 40 years to get to 400 pounds. Why in the world would I think I can just yank all that weight off in a short period of time. It would be just like showing up at a marathon completely out of shape with a 100 pound backpack on and telling everyone I was going to win...It's just plain dumb. It would never happen. I set my goals to something reasonable, like training for the Marathon in Denver in October. I started out slow and I am building to the point where I can finish it. Right now I doubt I could without a lot of help...

I have also given myself two full years to get ready for a bodybuilding show. It would be really dumb to say I am going to do one next year. There is no way to get in stage shape without a lot of training...baby steps to get there will make sure I do get there. No starvation diets needed, no illegal drugs. Just a steady and determined will thst takes the nessasary steps to do it all...

So stop running and slow to a jog, maybe just walk a little...heck maybe just crawl if you need to...You will get there in time I promise...

Yup! And a baby won't be detered and will not give up until they ARE walking! I posted a quote from Earl Nightingale about time just this morning!

Hey Dusty - Good coaching for me, I found myself starting to poke different areas of my body to see if the flab was going down, sometimes multiple times a day, You are 100% right, we all need to work the process and allow it to work for us! -Steve

Dusty - You're right! We expect instant gratification and we need to just enjoy the ride like those baby's! Isn't it great to know that you can make a little progress and then look back in a few months or a year and be like WOW!! Look what I'm doing NOW!!~Debra~
