Curb Your Enthusiasm

Have you ever been burned out? I have. I can get into a project and have it consume so much of me I want to quit and just go to bed. I am an enthusiastic person in almost everything I do. I have found over the years that enthusiasm leads to defeat if you aren't careful to pace yourself. Yes you will get burnt out and kill the project at hand.

I know almost every New Year I see people come into the gym. They are determined to lose weight and work out. They are going to lose that weight no matter what. This time is for sure...No ifs ands or buts about it. 2 weeks later they are gone. They get a bill from the gym each month for the next three years and that is about as close as they get to a workout.  They get the bill and their pulse races from frustration...Great workout I suppose...

So whats the key to longevity when it comes to getting healthy? I believe it's relaxing and learning how to SLOWLY turn your life around. Enthusiasm is great, but you cannot eat an elephant in one sitting...It takes time. We heap unreal expectations on ourselves, get obsessed with a number on a bathroom scale and want to be at the finish line all buff and muscular...You have set yourself up for failure from the start.

Transformation is a lifestyle. Some get it, some don't. I have seen a lot of really good transformations in the year I have been here on this site. I have also seen those same people leave. I would almost bet that they are not living a transformed life. It was just 18 weeks. They got to their finish line and quit. Why? Because they had enough enthusiasm for 18 weeks and not for a lifetime. They ran a sprint, they ran hard and they burned out. The sad thing is they will have a tough time swallowing their pride and coming back and restarting again...I believe it will be a hard lesson for some. But a much needed lesson in life.

I dont know if age has made me wake up to this fact about myself and others or I have just made that mistake enough to know better. But I will tell you if you just relax, trust the process and curb your enthusiasm you will learn something new about yourself every day. The walk will be a long one and not a sprint that you run out of gas in a few weeks...Hmmmmmmmmm reminds me of a story....

Be the TURTLE.

After reading this, I can now say that I am doing pretty good, then! I sure ain't a sprinter, that's for sure, but I'm still here, and I know sooner or later, the changes will catch up to me. Thanks for the reminder, Dusty! I'm proud to be a turtle! Much love! ~Maria
