You Never Know

You never know what can happen in life.

For a few years now, I have been wishing for my mother to make changes to her lifestyle. My father passed away of a heart attach at 47 years of age and I am seeing her head down that path due to her sedentary lifestyle.

Well, the wake up call came on Wednesday afternoon in the garden. She experienced a heart attack, followed by a second. The ambulance came, thanks to her wonderful husband Wayne. After over 24hrs in hospital, I am happy to report she is back home and doing fine.

I went through a number of emotions when I found out early Thursday and headed to the hospital: shock, saddness, fear and finally anger (at myself and at her for not taking care of the underlying causes). I was angry that she would let this happen to her, especially given that we both experienced the horrible ordeal of losing my dad at such a young age.

Well, there is a rainbow at the end of that storm cloud. She has received a massive wake up call and so have I. My mom wants to get better physically and is looking for my assistance. It just so happens that I am 1/2-way through my Personal Training Certification and will be able to provide a program and professional support very shortly (for now I am the supportive daughter, not the trainer). She is starting to do the right things for herself and I can't wait to see her get better.

If you or someone you know needs to take some steps in the right direction to take care of themselves, please support them in any way that you can (maybe by helping improve their environment - as discussed in one of BP's Transformation assignments). My mom was lucky, she got a wake up call. My father never had that chance. It's not a guarantee.

Please take care of yourself and others. Life is too short to live poorly and even shorter if you do.

Yours in fitness, always.

Thanks Marie. Yup, I have become a source of pain for her! I make sure to check that she has done her workout and that she is eating right. :o)

My daughter and I just competed a BFL challenge and are starting another today. Working out together has brought us closer together. It is too bad your mom had to have such a startling wake up call, but thankfully, she can now use that experience to improve her health. You will be a wonderful source of knowledge and inspiration to her.

Thank you all for your comments. This was a tough blog entry to write. Hope it helps someone.

If your mom is anything like you, my friend, once she makes up her mind she will be on her way. I'm thankful that you are where you are on your journey and will be able to help her along on hers. What a blessing you are!

Sure sorry about her heart attacks, but until this kinda of scare came along, it wasn't enough motivation to take care of herself. Sounds like the 2 of you are headed down a wonderful path together and i'm sure it will bring you even closer together.

Helene I am so thankful that your mom has this opportunity to make changes. What a frightening event for both of you. What a wonderful chance you now have to help her as you complete your training!
