Assignment 8, to date

No wine for a week.  Go me!

So far, I've replaced my evening imbibation (Cool new word; I just made it up. Contact Webster's!) with reupholstery, making a video and reading.  I'm not sure if that's what Mr. P means when he says "turn it into a positive", but so far, that's the best I've got.

I'm not missing it too much.  Last night, I was a bit over-tired, and possibly dehydrated, and I got a bit of a craving for a glass of white over ice.  But, I breathed deeply a few times and it passed.

Lisa (msdoggirl) recommended Deepak Chapra's addiction book, which I got at the library and have been devouring.  It's really good, and speaks volumes to me.  His approach is much more holistic than AA.  I've never been one to give up power, as it is in such short supply for me sometimes.  So the "second step" of AA never rang true, sadly.  (I was an Al-Anon member for many years, and worked the steps to the best of my ability then).  Not to mention that I have trouble with GOD being perceived as a human-like entity.  That's not my God.  While the steps say, "as you perceive Him", they use HIM and capitals, and members mostly come from a Christian, Holy Trinity pov, and well, that's not all God is to me.  So, working AA's steps just never felt honest.

I'm NOT denigrating AA even one iota.  I've seen many times how well AA's approach works for most people who give it a go.  Just, ...not me.

Recognizing why I imbibe, calming my fears, and replacing it with something uplifting to my life is a much more personally satisfying cure for me.  Happenstance that both Mr. Phillips and Mr. Chopra both advocate such a solution to my low level habit?  I think not.  That's very obviously MY GOD working in my life!

I am so glad you like the book. To me it was one of the most loving and holistic approaches to overcoming an addiction. And I am stoked that you made it a week with out any wine. Hooray!!!! You rock. -- Lisa
