Training Progress Report

Well despite the best efforts of a rather hectic schedule and various volunteer responsibilities...I've been able to keep up with my training program pretty well. Yesterday I did my 4 miles on the treadmill at the gym. This coming week that goes up to 5 miles on my distance day. Total of mileage for the week is around 11 miles. Wow..that just blows my mind! I 100% would not have believed I could do this prior to letting my mind grasp the con...

Home at last

Well I'm home now...did you missme??We got done early yesterday so we rushed to check out of the hotel and begin our drive home. It was a difficult day for me. I woke with a bad neckache...did 1.5 miles on the treadmill anyway...then went to class. Despite quite a bit of medication it just wasn't helping. And then I'm facing a 5.5 hour drive back to Knoxville. I hung with it the best I could and finally had to ask the guys to stop so I could get ...

Traveling challenges

So this week I'm away from my home and my normal routine. What can I do to make sure that I can stick with my program?Well I packed protein bars and my gym clothes..at least part of my gym clothes..that's another story. So I'm eating out basically 4 times per day right now. 3 main meals and one snack. I;m going a little lighter on calories since I'm sitting in a training room for 8 hours a day.  This morning I got up early and walked my mile...

Stay the course

I'm just having a rough week. My various volunteer responsibilities are creeping up on me and demanding my time. My fulltime job is pushing my available time to do volunteer work lower and lower. It's 2 ends working against the middle...burning the candle at both ends..take your pick. Whichever option...I'm in the middle and it's not fun at the moment. I am a woman of my word. If I say I'm going to do something..I'll do it or die trying. I GET TO...

Savor the magic

We had some major snow showers here in Knoxville yesterday. A rare treat for us. Being in the valley we rarely get any measureable snow. We got about 2 inches yesterday. Snow just creates magic. Your inner child wants to come out and play. You want to make snow angels..build a snow man..have snowball fights. woohoo...enjoy those stolen magical moments.Yesterdays snow was a very wet and heavy snow. Bethany and her friends threw a few snowballs but...

Progress report

Well I am doing good. My progress report for the first 4 weeks is I'm down -4 lbs and a net of 2+ inches gone...with all the walking I've gained/toned my legs up quite a bit which is good. I had hoped for more inches lost..but I'm positive nonetheless and will just keep on keeping on doing what I do. I've been walking an average of 6 miles per week. This is a huge leap for me physically..and surprise surprise..my body is holding up to it pretty w...

Don't postpone your happiness!

As I was flipping through channels last night I came across one of my favorite shows...What Not to Wear on TLC..love that show..anyway...the girl on there had recently lost over 100 lbs..but was still dressing in baggy clothes hiding what was underneath. At the end of the show she said that she had realized that she'd been postponing her own happiness and that she was proud of how she looked now and that it was silly for her to have been putting ...

The Joker

So in the classic Batman story Harvey as the Joker is a very torn individual. A simple flip of a coin would determine whether you lived or died. Heads-up you're ok...tail up you're about to meet your end.For those that like to weigh themselves daily a similar outcome is possible. If the scale moves down you're happy...mood for the day is happy. If the scale doesn't move or moves up...mood for the day is upset and angry and frustrated. Don't let t...

Lessons from my Youth

I can clearly remember that first day of high school. 1984. There they were...the 'in crowd'...the pretty girls and guys...standing on the other side of the hallway. I wanted to be part of that crowd so I devised a plan. Each day I'd smile and talk with them and move a bit closer to 'that' side of the hallway. I'd sit near them in class. Sit close to them at lunch.  I made every effort possible to be part of 'that group'. Eventually I made i...

The honeymoon is over

So here we are at the end of January...the 'honeymoon' of starting a new fitness/nutrition program has faded. We've been jolly...maybe dropped a little weight...been active online and made tons of new friends. But suddenly things aren't happening fast enough. 'This' person has lost 20 lbs already..you've only lost 2 lbs in 3 weeks. 'This' person is having some amazing inner transformations and seems to really be getting it...you wonder if you're ...

Let's be honest

My weekends are sacred to me. Like most Moms I'm very busy with work and other duties during the week and sleeping in on Saturday and Sunday is my time to recharge my engine mentally and physically. As I was lying in bed this morning refusing to move, I realized that with my schedule for today that if I didn't get up right then to do my 3 miles on the treadmill it would NOT get done. So...I got my hiney out of bed...got Bethany fed and dress...

Be Persistent!

We all have scheduling challenges and issues that we face in our lives..this is where the 'life' portion of the program will come into affect. We must learn how to deal with ups and downs and bumps in the road without letting it completely derail us mentally, physically and emotionally. I know you're rolling your eyes right now..yeah right you say...I don't know what is going on in your personal life and how hard things are for you right now. Wel...

Create that inner smile!

So all day yesterday I was just grinning from ear to ear...I couldn't help myself. We had a big surprise for my daughter Bethany and were going to give it to her last night. A cellphone. We hid it in her jacket pocket and then called it. She was so excited! Ok..yes she is only 8..some of her friends had phones when they were 6..I kid you not. Anyway..she can't take it to school and can only use it when she's out playing in the neighborhood or out...

Life is a learning experience

So I'm still thinking about the whole advice versus interference issue I last blogged about. Several people commented that God may be using me as a tool for HIS work. I certainly believe this can indeed be true. But I think what I have learned the most from this recent revelation is to be very careful about offering advice and to be open to whether I'm being guided to offer the advice or am I offering the advice because of my inherant 'fix it' pe...

Advice or Interference?

I'm a 'fixer'. It is totally my personality type and actually sometimes I struggle to reign in that part of me. I want to help people..fix their problems..make life a little bit easier for them. But as I was doing some reading last night I read something that totally blew me away. It basically said by offering advice I was potentially interferring with the hand of God..putting my hand before His hand.Whoa...I had to stop and think about that one....

Grab the opportunity

Do you ever see a toddler trying to walk and you just want to go grab their little finger and provide some guidance? It's just a gentle touch...just one finger...and the toddler is able to stabilize and take a few steps. In my 'web wanderings' I've encountered quite a few people recently who need just that little finger to stabalize and provide direction. I'm very excited to be hosting a meeting at my home on saturday. Many of the peopl...

Totally geeked out

So I'm a bit off schedule right now. I"m in training tues-thursday this week. Yet I remain focused and food and exercise have been on track. Speaking of exercise..I was awake at 4am(yuck) and on the treadmill by 6am. This was the coolest treadmill I've ever seen! It had a HD tv monitor on it(a bit close for my perspective) and a digital touch screen that was waaay cool. If I could afford it I'd totally have one of these babies in my bonus ro...

Walking in expectation

It has often been said that we bring to ourselves what we expect to happen...if you expect negative then negative comes. If you expect to fail on your fitness/nutrition program..you will. I think the deeper truth in statements like that is you may be lacking in true belief in yourself and your ability to complete any program. Maybe you've stopped/started a hundred times in the past so what makes this time any different? Well YOU DO. YOU make it d...

Honoring self-promises

It's important that when we set goals that we honor the committments we make to ourselves. It is so easy to lie to the person in the mirror...we just rationalize that it is ok..just this one time...to not follow-through with our plan. We've had a hard day, its raining, you're tired, it's late, you're hungry...just skip the gym...doesn't matter that its only officially DAY 2 of your program...you'll make it up later right? These are all the lovely ...

Setting SMART goals!

*totally lifted from the Torchspirit website :)*******************Setting good, measurable & attainable goals is a little more involved than simply saying, "I want to lose weight and get fit."The "SMART" system of goal setting is a very effective method. It takes some work and time, but the results are worth it. SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and TimelyAn example of a SMART goal:   ...
