When helping doesn't help

We've all heard the expression 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink'....

As we seek to transform ourselves and to help others transform we have to realize that it is ultimately NOT our responsibility if the other person does not make a change. It does not represent a failure on our part. We can provide all the tools, all the love, all the support, but if the person is just not ready...it's a waste of time.

I have a person like this in my life and I get so very frustrated with the situation. While I often think a good swift kick in the hind-end would work, of course I realize that it in reality would only make the situation worse. People do not like to be told when they are wrong or what they 'need' to do..it sets off the defense mode and their level of stubborness to change goes through the roof. So we're really NOT helping even though we are trying to help.

I have learned to just step back and be responsible for my own self and living in a positive and uplifting way and walking as an example to those around me. I realize that I am always being watched whether its from my child watching the way I behave or my loved ones. So I must always act with dignity and pride even when it is difficult to step back and do so.

If you have someone in YOUR life that is trying to help you, be thankful, take the help, try to learn from it and thank them for their time and effort. If you are the person doing the helping, be patient, be a living example.

When they are ready...they will drink..
