Day 23 - Being Selfish
One thing the stewardess tells us during the pre-flight safety talk is if the plane loses pressurization, always put your own oxygen mask on before you put on your childs. At first glance, this seems terribly selfish. We're all taught to put the needs of our children, spouse, parents, employer, friends, pets, and complete strangers before our own.
This is one of the cornerstones of Christ Gospels...to love others as you love yourself.
However, sometimes, in order to be any good to our children and spouses, we have to set some time aside to get ourselves together. THis is especially true with regards to our physical health. I talk to people all the time who tell me they would like to be in better shape and they even know what to do...but they can't because they don't have time to work out and shop for the right kind of food. They don't have time to cook or keep journals...they're too busy tending to everyone else's needs.
This is very dangerous thinking. You must make time to take care of yourself. You will be a MUCH better parent, spouse, employee, and friend if you are in good physical shape. SOmetimes you have to have the courage to tell people NO in order to carve time out for yourself. DON'T FEEL GUILTY FOR DOING THIS!! You are doing the right thing.
In the long run, everyone in your life benefits if you are healthy!
I hope you are having a great day!
Peace and Love!
