I need more flutes

I Am

... a vandweller. I live in a van with my 10-year-old rottweiler. I am also a writer, artist and 54-year-old woman. I have had a rough life, but always managed to pull myself out of what seemed to be terminal disasters - thanks to God and a faith I've had since I was 14. Although I WAS one of the working homeless in 2006 (lived in my van in a Walmart parking lot in Highlands Ranch/Denver, Colorado for a year); I'm now a full-time freelance writer. I write copy, speeches, ghostwrite books, ebooks, and magazine articles. I now live out of my van by choice - since I love camping and traveling.

Background: I was severely beaten and abused as a child by a father who said he practiced killing us for years (smothering, drugging etc) for the day he planned to kill us all, then kill himself. He never quite had the guts to do it tho. I got away - left home at 17. I didn't speak to him for more than 15 years, until I found out he was dying from brain cancer. I contacted him, and forgave him. During that time he told me why he had abused us - out of his own pain. My essay about that is in Tim Russert's book, "Wisdom of Our Fathers...."

In college I rowed on the men's crew team until I was paralyzed from the waist down in an accident. Surgery and intense therapy gave me my legs back (mostly). But I quit rowing. I have numbness in my left leg to this day tho.

In my 30's I became a journalist, won some awards, did well, then in 2006 when my father died I quit my job as a newspaper editor (in Colorado) to travel and grieve. Instead, I became one of the working homeless for more than a year - living in my van. This past summer I spoke at TED Global 2009 about the homelessness I experienced. My message? "Hope always finds a way."

When I saw the first minute of that video and realized how fat I had become (I was an athlete in college and thin as a child) I got depressed, then decided to apply my message about hope/homelessness to my weight and weight loss. So I joined Gold's Gym in Dec. 09 and I started working out. I joined Gold's mostly to have a place to shower in whatever city I'm in...but I want to lose weight and feel better too. I've got an agent and am working on a book about overcoming whatever life throws at you. But I've since realized that my transformation isn't complete yet. So I'm here...learning how to change from the inside out. Thank you for being part of that journey!

Once I reach my goal weight I plan to get back on the road and travel instead of stay parked in one place, and interview, blog and write about homelessness, transformation and what it takes to transform. I already blog about that at my own outside blog. But not nearly like I want to. Soon though!!

My Favorite Charity

God's Pit Crew

To me, Transformation Means

Becoming the person I never let myself be growing up because I was afraid of the consequences of being "me" instead of what other people, including my parents, wanted me to be.

My Goals

To lose 110 pounds in the next year.
To finish the transformation challenge.
To find an apartment I can afford.
To become debt free.
To run a 5K.
To run a 10K.
To run a Marathon.
To compete in a Tri-athlon and FINISH.

My Intentions

To finish what I start.

Anyone!
