Rest day for me today. Last week was a great week and I'm looking forward to keeping the progress going. Now that the kids are back in school I'm back to a very regular dependable schedule which makes getting my workouts done like clockwork. I drop daughter #1 off at high school at 7:55 AM and then drive across the street to the YMCA for an hour of exercise M-F. Since I'm right there, it makes the process so much more time efficient rat...
To all my friends and supporters, I thought I'd take a few minutes and put down some thoughts to wrap up my journey to complete the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. I began this journey back in August 2011 with the full intention of completing it on my 55th birthday on June 20, 2012 by walking into the city of Santiago with my family to receive my Copostela (official certificate of completion issued by the Catholic Church) at the Ca...
Thought I'd take a few minutes and do a status update. I saw the podiatrist last Friday and she agrees with me that the pain in my right foot is no longer plantar fasciitis related. She had an X-ray done and that rules out a bone spur on the heel. There is a very small one, but not enough to account for my symptoms. She believes that the problem is a nerve related issue called Baxter's Nerve Entrapment (BNE) In a nutshell, a nerve that ...
After struggling with chronic plantar fasciitis for over 6 years (almost 7), I think I've completely rid myself of it. Here's a link to a blog I wrote with my treatment plan: http://www.transformation.com/WorkoutGuy/blog/The-Road-to-Santiago/My-Treatment-Plan-for-Plantar-Fasciitis/156217 I still have pain in my right heel that needs to be fixed before I endeavor to hike the 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago this May/June, but I am becoming...
I never got to posting a blog summarizing last week (October 10-16). Things got a little crazy this week with work and home activities. I also came to a decision that I need to focus more on fixing my foot rather than training. Bill teaches us that in order to accomplish big goals, we have to identify the most likely hurdles in our path and address them head-on before they limit our progress. There's no doubt in my mind the physically ...
We just finished a 5 mile hike with our local hiking group. That brings the total for the week up to 40.8 miles. I will probably adjust the total for the planned training mileage this week. I'm coming to the realization that the plan I have is just not sustainable. Oh I could probably handle it physically, but the time commitment is more than I can do. If I continue on this course it will turn into a full time job by next May just to get the...
NOTE: This is going to be a long one, and is meant to be more as a resource for people with plantar fasciitis than as entertaining reading. I’ve been living with Plantar Fasciitis (PF) for over six years and I’m just now getting it under control. My goal is to completely rid my feet of this pain by the time I begin the Camino de Santiago in May of 2012. As an interim goal, I want to be at a point in my treatment on January 1, 20...
I had a great week on the road to Santiago. I did two major hikes this week plus some filler cross training work on the elliptical and some shorter walks around the neighborhood. Truth be told, I'm only at 33.2 miles as I write this, but I plan on doing a two mile walk around the neighborhood later today with my wife. We're going to check out a road that shows up on Google maps very close to our house that loops around in the back country. Might ...
So far this week I've hiked 29.6 miles which is a few shy of my 35 mile goal, so with today's 6.8 mile hike, I only have 1,392 miles to go. I skipped the Wednesday training session because I had a issue with my left foot. It turned out to be pretty minor and nothing that a day of rest and some intensive icing couldn't cure, but it did put me a bit behind schedule. Our hiking group is doing a pretty intensive hike tomorrow, so I might jo...
After much consternation, I decided to take a day of rest today instead of doing my planned 14 mile hike. That will have to wait until tomorrow. I was really bummed out when I drove my oldest daughter to school this morning. The whole way I was looking at the sky and thinking how perfect a day it was for hiking; cool (upper 50's) and thick fog. Looks like the fog might also stick around until the late morning too. Once the fog is gone, the temper...
I moved my weekly long hike from Saturday morning to Wednesday morning. Being my own boss and having a very flexible schedule makes this possible. This will work much better for our family because weekends can get a little congested with family activaites, and my wife and youngest daughter sometimes like to join me for some hikes, but they're not up to my long training hikes. My plan is to drop my oldest daughter off at the high school about...
Yesterday I finished a backpack training hike which ended up being 11.2 miles. Originally, I only planned on doing a simple 10 mile round trip from my house to a coffee shop in Solvang, but on the way in I decided that the traffic on Highway 246 was just too much. I like the highway because it has a nice wide shoulder with bike lanes on both sides, but the constant whoosh of cars going past me was very annoying; also needed to be very vigila...
I'm gearing up for another training hike tomorrow. I plan on doing 10-12 miles with a weighted backpack. This time I plan on doing a relatively simple and flat hike into the neighboring town (Solvang). Then I'll have lunch, refill my water and return home. I also put together an overall training schedule that will get me ready to do week-long hikes with 17 mile days. I plan on building up to a 6-day/100 mile hike in April 2012. Great news! I...
I made up a training plan today that will help me prepare for my Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, and then added the 500 miles of the actual pilgrimage onto it and came up with the number 1,527 miles (2457 Km).Yesterday I did my first real training hike with a loaded backpack for my Camino de Santiago adventure. I learned a lot from it. By far and away the most important thing I learned is that I got to get the footwear thing right. I thought ...
I had an awesome experience at a outdoors sporting goods store in Santa Barbara today (Mountain Air Sports). So different than the experience I had at REI last Saturday in LA. These people were genuinly interested in helping me, what a concept! More than that, they knew what they were talking about and spoke from experience. They each had their specialties too. The shoe guy spent about an hour with me and pretty much nailed the selection from a b...
OK, I've been talking quite a bit about doing the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage for some time now. I've spent countless hours researching it on the internet but no real, measureable progress toward the goal of hiking 500 miles across northern Spain in four weeks or less in May 2012. I haven't counted continuation of my running, or other aerobic activities as training for the event (even though it is), but just for the record, this ...
I'm a bit sore from my 9+ mile run and my daughter found a ride to school so she didn't need one from me. My new schedule is to drop her off at school and then head across the street to the YMCA and do a run from there. But today, being sore and her finding a ride spelled "skipping the planned run". I'm OK with that. I plan on doing 30 to 60 minutes on the AirDyne bike instead later this afternoon. I had a new thought about training for...
Today I ran 9.23 miles (11:36 pace) from the door step of the YMCA to the foot of the Sant Ynez mountains at the Rufgio pass. I actually went up the mountain about 0.2 mile just to make sure the total run was over 9 miles (my goal). I saw a coyote on the way too. We stared each other down as I passed by and then we each went on our seperate ways. I'm still in my marathon training mode and will probably stick to mostly run...
So, I'm really getting swallowed up by this Camino thing. I spent about 3 hours on the internet late last night researching various aspects of it from shoes to laptops, what to bring and what to leave behind. I need to take a step back and put it in perspective. If it does happen it's about 9 months away, so I don't have to work out every detail today, tomorrow. or even next month. So, step back Jim and don't lose site of your priorities.I'm just...
I posted this in my accountabioity group today, but thought it might be worth a bog. I had an epiphany while running yesterday that just won't go away. More than not going away, I keep getting more excited the more I think about it. I haven't felt this way since Bill issued the Challenge in 2009 to run a half marathon for Mak-A-Wish. Could I do it? It was fun, exciting and VERY challenging and in the end, very rewarding. So here's ...
