Bill's post

I GET TO

Today our community is grieving for Denise and the Taylor family with the loss of Jonnae just yesterday morning. The outpouring of compassion, kindness and love from all of you here in the community has been incredible to witness.

I’m just really proud, not only of Denise, but all of you as well. I’m really beginning to see your true character… the practice of the Universal Law of Reciprocation here is very authentic and from the heart. And that’s important. Giving others support, care, and encouragement is not about “what’s in it for me.” It’s just something that becomes second nature and an expression of who you are as you begin to mature and grow along spiritual lines.

Along with the grieving, for me, is also a joyful feeling -- a reverence and appreciation for how much Jonnae touched my life. I know I’m not the only one here who just fell in love with this beautiful soul and spent many hours over the past month praying for and thinking about her. And you know, today she is on my mind as much as ever; in particular, the way she transformed adversity into an opportunity to grow spiritually, and help others do the same.

Jonnae

Everyone who met Jonnae was uplifted by her courage, positive attitude, and her way of seeing things. Even on the most challenging days, Jonnae was helping others feel better about themselves. She always seemed to lift other people’s spirits with her beautiful smile, her laugh, and her kind words. Make no mistake, Jonnae left this world with no regrets, no resentments, no enemies, and surrounded by love. Her spirit is alive and well and her legacy is just beginning.

My favorite thing that Jonnae taught me is summed up in three words: “I GET TO.” In fact, I really believe that I GET TO has the potential to become a powerful mindset mantra for Transformers; akin to what “Just Do It” is for athletes.

What ‘I GET TO’ Means to Me…

As I see it, when we approach everyday life with the mindset I GET TO, it really means we’re shifting away from an attitude of obligation and into one of appreciation. And that’s quite a change -- it’s a change that can literally transform your entire life. Here’s one reason why…

The science of Quantum Physics (Quantum Physics is actually the term modern scientists use to describe the study of universal laws of spirit -- the realm at which everything is interconnected) shows that we actually change the things we see by changing the way we see them. It’s called the “observer effect.” What it amounts to, literally, is if I look at life as beautiful, fun and filled with opportunities to make a difference, that’s the way life is going to show up for me. Now, of course, if we look at the world with negativity, we find disappointment, frustration, and unhappiness. It’s sad but true. And it’s not just that we partition off the good stuff in order to see the bad; it’s actually because negative intention produces what I call “anti-results,” and for that person, the world actually is an angry, lonely, disconnected place.

So, instead of thinking, “I have to exercise today… I have to eat healthy… I have to practice the Universal Law of Reciprocation” and so on, flip that switch to the positive perspective and say, “I GET TO exercise, I GET TO eat healthy, and I GET TO treat others with CARE (Compassion, Appreciation, Respect, Encouragement).” If we approach life this way, each and every day, the changes you see -- the changes you help create -- will astonish you. I promise.

I mean really, consider Jonnae… one reason her example is so inspiring is that even with all the adversity, painful procedures, the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy, she still had the inner strength to say, “I GET TO live another day.”

Now I ask you: What could possibly be going on in your life today, that would prevent you from moving forward with that much appreciation? Is anything stopping you from saying I GET TO? I’ve heard people come up with a dozen excuses why they can’t (I can’t because everybody’s against me; I can’t because I’ve got a back injury; I can’t because my life is so busy that I don’t have time, etc. etc.). It’s important to know the difference between excuses like those, and reasons why you can. Here’s a reason… how about to honor Jonnae? That sure seems like a good reason to me! By doing so -- by saying, over and over again, I GET TO, we will not only keep Jonnae’s spirit alive and going strong, we will also benefit individually and collectively -- we will become more empowered, more caring, more humble and yet more able to make a difference in the lives of others.

So, are you in? If so, let me know by posting a comment below.

With appreciation,

Bill

I GET TOP.S. Denise received some help from a compassionate woman named Melodi who arranged for Jonnae’s saying, I GET TO, to be embossed on passion purple wristbands. And how you get one is to simply make a small donation, which supports the Taylor Family with the extensive medical costs incurred during the three years of Jonnae's treatment. Denise has suggested that in lieu of sending her and her family flowers and gifts to express your condolences, that you consider making a donation for the wristband instead. I’ve already done so and if you’d like to as well, click here.

P.P.S. By request, we’ve just posted a five-minute video of special moments from Jonnae’s Celebration of Life party which was held last weekend. Click here to watch the video.

Last week I saw the video when Bill visited Jonnae and her family, but it wasn't until today that I realized that she had already passed away. I just ordered two bracelets (for my husband and I), and I will wear mine next to my Livestrong bracelet that I have worn since the month of its inception. Eight members of my family (save my sister and I) have had cancer. All are survivors except my mom who just recently died from non-smoker's lung cancer. I miss hearing her say my name and holding my hand. My heart aches for Jonnae's family, as I cannot fathom the grief they must be enduring. But I thank them for allowing us the opportunity to know their daughter and for sharing her strength. Jesus was always by her side.

I don't know what else to say axcept THANK YOU. My daughter who is 2 1/2 has cancer also. Jonnae Taylor and Denise have been such an inspiration to us as a family. We proudly wear our "I GET TO" bracelets everyday including my daughter Jaina. Jonnae will forever be a part of our family too! With love an light, Kateri

Wow Just found this transformation site this morning, and I have been crying non stop. The videos of Jonnae and the encouragement she and her mom Denise give. They have made such a diffrence in this world, and we all can. I have felt like lately I have had one bad thing after another, and I am greatful. I am going to go on, and become the full potential for what God has intended. I think of the Ray Boltz song"Thank you for giviing to the Lord" Thank you, Jonnae, Denise, Bill. I am excited to accept this Challenge to transform, it is not to late....Kimberly

After I read this post, I had to go back and find out the story. What a wonderful little girl and great mother. I don't know how in the world she found the inner strength. This to me would be one of the hardest things a mother would have to experience. Thoughts and prayers are with you. But, these three words have been with me ever since. "I Get To..." What a great legacy. Jonnae will touch more lives then she will ever know, except that I believe she is looking down from heaven right now and knows the impact of her life. My she continue to bless everyone that reads her story. I am proud of Jonnae and Denise and pray God put his arms around the Taylor family.

Thanks for the great post Bill. It's very evident that your heart was knitted with Jonnae and her family. What a beautiful young lady she was. My mom went through breast cancer a couple years ago and is now cancer free, thank the Lord. I'm going to order a bracelet for her and for myself...on second thought, maybe I'll order enough for the whole family! What a great message that is...I GET TO! My friend Mark Cahill says the same thing in his book titled "One Thing You Can't Do In Heaven." That one thing is sharing our faith in Christ with those who are not yet believers. What a privilege it is to share the hope I have in Christ and tell folks there is so much more than what we see around us.

Before responding to your question, I ordered the purple "I Get To" bracelets for myself and my siblings here in South Africa, and I want to share Jonnae's legacy and the Taylor family with them, so they in turn will spread the word to all their friends as I will too. I'm one of those who has been saying: "I have to fit in my workout today" or "I have to eat correctly" not out of duty, but because I'm so committed to the programme, and wanting to achieve my goals, but from today, I will say "I GET TO" workout today, because I can and want to, and "I GET TO" do everything else. People all around me (at work, friends, at social events) say I'm so disciplined, strict, have strong willpower, etc. and I was saying it's because I HAVE TO stick to my goals to achieve my B4L. Henceforth, it will be I GET TO stick to my goals because I'm healthy and love being able to do so, and tell them where I get the quote from, and what it means to me. Not only Jonnae and Denise, but everyone on this transformation site - while I workout now, since joining this site, I'm aware as I'm doing an exercise that burns ;-) that in the world out there, many others are experiencing the same thing :) and it gives me extra willpower and motivation! A huge thanks to Bill, your team, and everyone on here! God Bless, DolphinGirl :)

Jonnae has already changed me in just a matter of hours.....her story is so inspiring, her persona is so enlightening, her amount of wisdom for a 15 year old is amazing to me and the ripple effect she sends out of positiveness and love has made it's way into my heart and life. I thank you for that. I will also order an "I GET TO" bracelet and everytime I find myself thinking a negative though, I'll switch it to the other arm so I make myself aware of what I am doing! I am very humbled by you Jonnae. I am also thankful that I can continue that "ripple" you started and hopefully, in time, it will cause a wave of positive people who also realize they "GET TO" rather than "HAVE TO" in their lives! We had a great talk about Jonnae, and how she accomplished so much, and her awesome attitude. I reminded her about "I GET TO" and it put a fresh perspective on her work load. She is excited to share this with her friends. I will definately get a supply of them to share this important transforming message. I love the idea of it being our community mantra. It totally fits with the mindset essential for transformation, and demonstrates a willing, grateful attitude. Very powerful. I love it.

Hey Bill, I will make the commitment to change my 'have to's' to 'Get To's' in honor of Jonnae! I will also order that bracelet to remind me of my commitment everyday. Thanks for the positive spin, I think it's a great idea! Bob

If it weren't for Bill listening to God's commands, we wouldn't have gotten together to be the healthiest we could be. We wouldn't have met Denise and her family. Do you think it was a just a coincidence that we met Jonnae only a couple of months before she left us to meet her maker? No. Bill was nudged by the Big Guy and Bill listened. Denise was nudged and then we were honored to meet Jonnae. Jonnae taught all of us a lesson or two. Some drew strength because of her attitude and ordeal. Some, hope. Some, inspiration. Some, humility. Some, like me...shame. I'm ashamed of not doing more in my life and being an inspiration to everyone I meet. Jonnae, thank you. You made me a better person. I'll wear the bracelet with pride.

Bill - I dont know you and you don't know me...and I've only been here for 3-ish days. But today I found myself talking about Jonnae a number of times. On the night of 6/8 I showed my 12 yr old daughter the video of Jonnae and we prayed for her and her family together. Yesterday, she caught me online just as I realized Jonnae had passed and I was crying. We held each other and had a moment in silence for her. Today my daughter gave me attitude and got whiney...and reminded her of Jonnae's courage during painful times. Tonight I visited with a friend from church who recently married in April & found out her husband is a different man and she's close to trying to get out....I brought up Jonnae and your site. I told her how positive an inspiring this little girl is....and how in the few hours I've been a member here, she's totally changed my outlook and the way I think. Tonight in your blog - YOU, BILL - have helped me see how I need to continue that to honor Jonnae and to keep that wonderful saying in my mind at all times...I GET TO. Geez....how simple yet profound. Thank you sooooo much for all you do and for keeping Jonnae's legacy alive. - Bella

I will be running with Team in Training, the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco (only my second). Team in Training raises money for blood cancers, just like Jonnae's. I recently signed up and was wondering who my "honored hero" would be -and now I know. It can be Jonnae! I can wear her name proudly on my jersey as I run and walk with 30,000 other people, committed to stopping blood cancers. Please email me for more info - Team in Training is an amazing org - and anyone can do a marathon or other endurance event - with their training and support and Jonnae's inspiration! tracijohn@mac.com

Funny you posted this today. Jonnae and her "I Get To" have been on my mind all day. As the Spirit led me, I had to share Jonnae's story with two ppl who have never heard of her. She had a message for the world - and we just can't keep it to ourselves. I have adopted "I Get To" as our new family motto. What an important lesson to teach our children - that life is to be lived, appreciated and loved. It's a blessing that we are privileged to participate in. We get to do His work and will. Jonnae did it with all her heart. I pray I can do it half as well. Thanks for introducing me to Jonnae.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Me and my husband completed the BFL program years ago and after recently losing my only sister to lymphoma, I decided that I needed to focus more on my health. I googled your name because I knew you had left EAS but wasn't sure what you were doing. I couldn't believe it when I found Transformations and that you were so supportive to Denise as she was telling us about her life with Jonnae. I could relate with so many of the feelings that Denise was going through. When you go through such an emotional situation, you really think about a lot of things. I had flown back to Colorado from NC mutliple times during the two months that my sister was battling this terrible disease. As I looked at others in the hallways of the hospital, I thought how strange this situation was that most of them were visiting people to encourage them to get better, while my family was there waiting for my sister to pass away. Jonnae reminded me so much of my sister as she too was so positive and didn't once complain about the pain she was experiencing or the mere fact that she had this disease. I was with my sister when she took her last breath and it was the most spiritual event that I have ever been through. She squeezed our hands and found enough strength to open her eyes and give us a smile. There was no panic in the room, but rather such a sense of calmness and love. Jonnae and Shelly have truly inspired so many people. I am in the process of training for a 5 hour test for my 3rd Degree Black Belt. The test is comprised to test not only your physical endurance but your mental endurance too. I am definatetly going to get one of the bracelets to remind me that I don't have to train, but I GET TO train and prove to myself that I can do anything that I put my mind to.

Its so amazing to see how God brings messages and stories of faith, hope strength and courage to many people and this was done through Jonnae's celebration of life. God loved her so much and needed his angel back with him where she will continue to shine on and bring joy to HEAVEN. This I believe. I GET TO enter a body competition in Australia in SEPTEMBER. I GET TO train HARD and SUCCEED. God bless and love to all carmen

As I was ordering the bracelets yesterday, I knew life for me would be different. I thought of Denise and Jonnae through the day, and the emotions were overwhelming...not only sadness, but sincere gratitude and something new...for people I haven't met...a new type of love. Sometimes there's heartache, but still I GET TO make healthy changes because of Jonnae...and all the people adding loving thoughts and support to this site. Thank you all so very much!

Dear Bill, thank you for posting the blog about Jonnae. It is amazing how someone I've never met could have such an impact on me. Yesterday I cried when I found out that passed away, but today instead of grieving her death, I was happy about the way she lived and how she taught me how to be strong. Today I GET TO honor the memory of Jonnae Taylor by buying a wristband. I've donated something to Light the Night for Team FROG as well. I only wish it could have been more, but I GET TO make a difference. My prayers go out the the Taylor family and I hope that they find peace in knowing that Jonnae is with God and SHE GETS TO be in heaven.

Bill, I got to meet you at the Celebration of Jonnae's life. An incredible day I'll never forget. I've known Denise from high school, and have followed Jonnae's journey. From the inspiration of Jonnae and Denise, I completed my first 84 day challenge yesterday, ironically on the day she passed. I've lost 25 pounds, and feel great . I'm ready for the second one to begin. I am a physical therapist with all the exercise equipment at my fingertips, and finally after knowing what all Jonnae faced everyday, said "enough already", if this kid can do all she is doing, what is my excuse? My excuse was always "not enough time". I take care of patients all day, and three children after work, one who has multiple disabilities. Denise and Jonnae have made me step my life up a notch. I GET TO take care of myself, and then I'll take care of everyone else. Truly life changing!!!

Dear Bill, Thank you for providing such an inspiring blog on Jonnae's I GET TO and what that means to you. I have signed up with Team in Training, to participate in the Nike 1/2 marathon in October. Originally I had signed up for an event in June, but had three injuries due to being 51, overweight and out of shape......so I decided to do the October event instead walking this time. My training just started today......with a 2 mile brisk walk.....and I DID IT......thinking about Jonnae and how she is my honoree on my webpage......and how important Denise is to me as well. I'll be ordering my bracelet....the purple will go great with the Team In Training logo.....My new mantra is I GET TO DO IT FOR JONNAE......and you know what? I WILL DO IT to raise funds to stop this terrible disease. Thank you for this site and your compassion and how sincere you are. In Christ, Audrey Giorgio

CinAz wrote 165 Days Ago

I ordered several the other day. My father in law has always made the comment, It's not a have to, it's a get to, when he would ask someone if they wanted to do something. It always made sense and I started using it on my kids. Never did it have the meaning or intensity to it when I heard it from Jonnae's perspective. Your post Bill is right on, you know my situation and over the past couple of weeks, when I would get really low and start feeling sorry for myself, Jonnae and Denise would come to my mind, I would immediately slap myself around and think, what, what do you have to be down about. This situation, is NOTHING. In the big picture, it is a blemish, a blemish that with time will go away. Although I have never talked to either one of them, they have given me so much strength to take on all that is thrown my way. I owe them both enormously. I find myself hurting more for Denise right now and her emptiness she must feel right now then my own situation. It is frustrating that only time can heal that for her. I wish there was something that could be said or done to make it quicker. My prayers are with her completely.
