Kevin Sharp: Inspiring Hero Joins the Denver Event!
As I see it, a hero is someone who faces tremendous adversity in life and becomes a better person who makes a difference in the lives of others because of it. Kevin Sharp is one such hero. Let me tell you about his story...
Kevin Sharp grew up in Idaho in a musical family of seven children. Between farm chores and running the local diner, the family would sing at area church functions. They moved to Sacramento, California as Kevin was entering high school. A gifted athlete who excelled in several sports, Kevin began experiencing an unusual fatigue and pain.
After seeing several doctors, Kevin's life was devastated with the news that he was suffering from bone cancer which had spread to his lungs. A doctor sat down with Kevin and his parents and explained that, unfortunately, there was a greater than 80 percent chance that Kevin's life would end within six months. In an instant, all the hopes for the future of this young man seemed to be washed away.
As Kevin began to courageously undergo chemotherapy treatment, he was introduced to the Make-A-Wish Foundation which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. As a musician and performer himself, Kevin greatly admired a composer/performer/producer named David Foster, who had collaborated with and mentored iconic stars such as Barbra Streisand, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Madonna and Andrea Bocelli.
As Kevin began to courageously undergo chemotherapy treatment, he was introduced to the Make-A-Wish Foundation which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. As a musician and performer himself, Kevin greatly admired a composer/performer/producer named David Foster, who had collaborated with and mentored iconic stars such as Barbra Streisand, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Madonna and Andrea Bocelli.
Kevin's wish was simply to meet David Foster, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation made that dream come true. In fact, Kevin and David became good friends who kept in touch throughout the course of his chemotherapy, radiation treatments and other medical procedures. All the while, Kevin kept alive his ultimate dream and goal which was to record an album of his own. This dream helped inspire him and gave him strength to face the daily and painful treatments. Deep down inside, Kevin never stopped believing that he had a future.
To everyone's surprise, Kevin's illness went into remission and he began to feel healthy and strong once again. Without wasting any time, he made a demo tape and sent it to David Foster to ask for advice about how he could become a better singer and performer. To his surprise, David signed him to his first record deal! And his debut album, titled "Measure of a Man," went platinum producing a string of chart-topping songs, including the highly acclaimed #1 hit "Nobody Knows" which held the top spot on the Billboard chart for four weeks.
Humbled, even astonished, by his achievements, Kevin continued on with dedication and faith. His musical career was soon garnering numerous award nominations including "New Male Vocalist" from the Academy of Country Music, "New Touring Artist of the Year" from the Country Music Association/SRO, "Favorite New Country Artist" from the American Music Awards, Billboard Magazine's "Best New Country Video" and TNN/Music City News Awards "Male Star of Tomorrow." He was on Billboard Magazine's Top 10 list for both Country Artist and Country Album and was given a trophy for the CMT "Rising Male Video Star of the Year."
Word of his inspiring story spread, and was soon being shared by media outlets including "Live with Regis and Kathy Lee," "Entertainment Tonight," "Good Morning America" and national publications such as USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, and People Magazine. Kevin's life story is also being developed by a Hollywood studio as the basis for an inspirational movie.
Kevin went on to write a book about his experience called "Tragedy's Gift" which encourages all people to never give up on life or on their dreams. And, he has never forgotten the generosity of the Make-A-Wish Foundation; now he serves as a spokesperson for the charity. He even wrote and donated the organization's theme song, simply called "Make A Wish."

For his contributions, he has been honored with the prestigious "Wishgranter of the Year Award" which recognized his devotion, dedication and the inspiration he provides to children facing life-threatening illnesses. Kevin is also in the unique position that he is the first wish child to become the wish request of other kids, truly making his wish experience come full circle.

Listening to Kevin last night on Transformation Talk Radio was very inspiring, because he gave us insight on where he came from as a teenager stricken with cancer. Today, though Kevin is successfully battling it over a decade plus later, he continues to inspire those who feel shut in, to make positive changes in their lives and knock down the walls of adversity in being role models themselves. Bill thank you so much for sharing this amazing story. Right now I am writing/performing with Julie Oehme an unsigned singer/songwriter that sounds like Joss Stone/ Sarah Mclaughlin who has significant medical issues, so I felt a parallel with Kevin's story. I realize how important support is and that is why I see how Make a Wish foundation makes such a big difference. So does our personal choice to help others. Wow. I remember hearing "Nobody Knows" years ago and it has always been one of my favorites. I am so happy to know the story behind the artist now. It is very inspiring to read such stories of triumph and courage. I am recovering from a life-threatening brain injury and although I've had some major break throughs, I sometimes get caught up in feeling sorry for myself. Every time I read or hear of a story like this, it puts me right back into gratitude for having a second chance at life. It also inspires me to move in the direction of helping others which is what I realized i want to do more than anything. I've been allowing myself to stay stuck in fear of rejection by not reaching out and taking action on this heart's desire of mine. Reading this and contemplating my own life over the last 12 or so hours since I first read this has prompted me to finally send in my application for a volunteer position at an equestrian riding therapy facility called SERT near my home. I'm still scared but I have to ask "How long am I going to continue allowing fear to run my life?" - It's been 37 years in the making but the good news is, it can be transformed in an instant - through taking action. He has been diagnosed with B Cell Stage 4 Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma and his charity is my charity of choice. He gave me a new drive and commitment to my Transformation and I am inspired by him every day. I wish I could do the same for him. Pretty amazing story and so inspirational, especailly to the heros living with and battling this disease. Wonderful and inspiriing story.
Its good to learn the people behind the music we listen to. Many people know the songs but never know the history of the person behind the music. Knowing what Kevin went through makes the words and music bring on a different and more meaningful message. Learning about people brings on a definition we would otherwise never understand.

I listen to country music all the time and definitely knew this song, but didn't know the story of the man behind the music. I really needed to hear this today because when you think you have impossible challenges in your life and then realize there are others out there dealing with more adversity than you could imagine........it's very inspiring to hear about someone like Kevin being able to be so happy and successful with all the obstacles thrown at him, Roseann

The questions that have privately stirred in my mind for a long time ...How do you get though tragedy?
