The Transformation of Chris Winters
Dear Friends,
The transformation stories just keep getting better and better! Consider the case of one of our new Be The Change Challenge Champions, 41-year old Chris Winters of Mesa, Arizona.
Last summer, Chris’ life was spiraling downwards, out of control; he had lost or was on the verge of losing anything and everything that mattered to him. He had become imprisoned by his addiction to alcohol. What began as a few extra drinks on weekends 5 years ago had now reached the point where Chris needed a drink of vodka just to get out of bed. Chris had lost control of his life. He became cross addicted to food – binge eating to try to comfort and cope with his pain. He had lost his health, his self esteem, and was on the verge of losing his wife and 3 young children (Ages 1, 4, and 6). Chris was also in real danger of losing his own life.
“I was embarrassed about what I had become in the eyes of my kids. I always imagined that I would be a hero to my kids. And there I was, the alcoholic, overweight, absent father.” Chris painfully recalls. “I had many fears about change. Fear of failing. Fear of not being able to finish what I start. At that time,
I did not feel strong enough to cope with more failure in my life.”
Chris found his way to this transformation community in June of ’08. He read about the Transformation Challenge. He reviewed the stories of people who had already succeeded and he began to feel something he hadn’t experienced in a long time: HOPE. That hope transformed desperation into inspiration, and shortly thereafter, Chris made a powerful move, “I made the decision to change… to be a hero to my kids after all.” From there, Chris accepted the challenge and began to do the work.
“Assignment 1, taking a brutally honest look at myself, was the most powerful exercise for me. Looking at my awful before photo, and then reflecting on what I had become, not just physically but mentally, emotionally and spiritually, I was... I was floored.”
Taking responsibility for his situation and accepting that there was nothing he could do about the past, allowed Chris to let go of regrets, freeing up energy which he utilized to construct a bright vision for his future. He wanted to be lean, muscular, healthy, energetic and strong. He saw a future vision of himself sober, no longer imprisoned by alcohol and food addiction. He vowed to restore his relationship with his wife, kids and family. And Chris knew that by making the change in his life, he'd be able to reach out and help others make the change too.
“When I caught myself feeling down or unwilling to do the inner work, or go to the gym, I simply logged into the Transformation Community, read inspiring posts, or watched a Transformation TV clip. That would provide the spark of energy I needed to keep going.” Chris explains.
Fast forward to now: Chris is 40 lbs. lighter, looks 10 years younger, and is in recovery from alcohol addiction; 7 months sober and counting, one day at a time. He enjoys frequent, healthy, portion-controlled meals each day, and is no longer binge eating or constantly craving. He’s regained discipline, focus, purpose and love.
“Today I spend time with my wife every evening. We talk, joke, laugh, watch funny movies... we share with each other our dreams for our lives, and our kids. I coach my daughter's 4-year old and my son’s 6-year old soccer teams, and I put them to bed each night. For five years, this is something I never did.” This is Chris describing his new life. He’s arrived at this point through a great deal of work, courageously overcoming potentially paralyzing fears, and healing himself of the emotional pain of the past, finding forgiveness, for himself and others, taking responsibility for his life, and reaching out to ask for help. “I am so very, very thankful for the second chance to live and to share my life with my family and others. Accepting the Transformation Challenge changed everything for me.”
And now, Chris Winters is a Transformation Champion! Out of the thousands of people who accepted the challenge last summer, he was selected as one of 5 new winners. We gave him the good news on last Wednesday’s special surprise Transformation Talk Radio show. Chris has been rewarded with $10,000 for his family and $10,000 to donate to the charity of his choice ($9,000 to the Kal Sang Ling Charitable Foundation; and $1,000 to Project We Remember). Chris also receives an all expense paid trip for him and a guest to a Transformation retreat the 3rd week of March at the Four Seasons Kona Hawaii where he'll meet the other Champions. Hello Chris! I have just decided to use you as my personal motivation as I go along this path of transformation. Your results are so outstanding that I just get INSPIRED. I know that there is no shortcut to such results. It is dedication and work and endurance and patience. I need to tap into some hidden reserve of commitment here. The kind of mental reward you get from such a transformation must be completely life-altering.
What a story, what a life you had and now have. You are truly living now!!!! You are a huge inspiration. I just downloaded some past pod cast episodes and had the privlige of hearing you talk, I loved everything you said - powerful stuff. I have someone in my life who struggled with alcoholism and by the grace of God and love and support from others that person triumphed and overcame the addiction and I am very proud of them. Thanks for sharing your story. I too believe so much in visualization, my eye today is on me and my family's future vision. BTW, "Captain and Coach" - that's funny:)

LOL - Speechless again (Did that say something or what?) but I do have something to say now. I am truly inspired by your story. I have watched the video 3 or four times. I talked about your accomplishment to my sons but I doubt if they heard me. They think mom found a new diet fad and everything I talk about is great mom but it's not my way. My husband did listen to me. He watched your video twice over my shoulder. TWICE can you believe it? I have been here at Transformation about 2 months now and I think my husband just might be thinking of joining. I am really hoping for this that we might do the transformation together.

I found the Radio chat with Chris last night so inspiring, it's finally given my that push I need to decide to quit smoking. I have made my doctor's appointment for Monday and I'll see if I can't get something to help me quit. After I chat with him and sort that out, then I'll line up a quit date. Thank you Chris.

What a truly inspirational story! This came to me at a time where I am hitting many roadblocks in my life. I have set my goals in 2009 to be a better father, husband, son and brother, and to better my mind and body as it once was. I have made fantastic changes in past years and achieved many goals but at 42 those past goals get harder and harder to reach. I am 29 days into my dieting and training and your story just gave me another 29! I will keep coming back to read these inspirational stories just as you did and i hope to show you my after picture in the spring!! God Bless Chris and congrats!!!

Faced with adversity, you performed the most powerful thing a human being can do...you made a decision to become something else. No other living being on the planet has this power. That is what transformation is all about. Your body, your addictions, your behaviours were never really YOU.
