Neck & Back Surgery need core strengthening help
I'm trying to find help with how I can workout while recovering from neck surgery I had 2 months ago. I also had back surgery 10 years ago & still suffer daily with chronic pain. I've been working out for 3 weeks now & have made it to 8 miles on the elliptical along with swimming & some made-up pool exercise. I surprise myself everyday I even make it 1 mile on that thing!! I need ANY advise on strengthening my core, preferably in the pool since sit ups & crunches kill my neck & back. I'm losing weight everywhere I don't need it & NOT where I do, which is my stomach! But with my pain level I can't really do any other type of traditional exercise outside of the pool. I'm also hoping what everyone says is true, strong core=less back pain. Can anyone help??

There is a member by the name of Jerome. He goes by www.transformation.com/Plantman0819. He has been doing Transformation for some time and has had numerous back surgeries. He may be able to help you with your questions! Carolynn

I have a back condition - spoondylolethesis and I am grade 2 so surgery is questionable at least for today. But, I am deep in physical therapy with traction 3x a week.
Now as to you.... I do two lumbar back core exercises... 1. using a pilates ball or a chair, I do partial curl ups - 3x for 10 just started. There are pt websites that have safe exercises - as determined by condition. 2. I do modified wall squats with a pilates ball for the back support. No squats lower down than 90%. I also speak with Jerome aka Plantman0819!!! There is a very well regarded gentleman by the name of BURDENKO. He rehabilitated Nancy Kerrigan and Oskna - both skaters....Google him, there are lots of water stuff on the net which I am starting to learn about. I just joined yesterday and am a chiropractor.
I have had this question a lot and will admit there is not standard answer. Often I have to tailr a different program for eacch patient wanting to strengthen their core. Nearly every one needs to start with stretching the hamstrings and strengthening the gluteals(butt). There are numerous resources online that you can reference and find 2-3 procedures that work for you. It may have to be a "live and learn" process of trying one and seeing if it causes problems. If not, stick with it. Stay positive and much luck to you. |
