Actively thinking about an injury plan
You know, I am a worrier. I'm better than I was, but I used to drive people in my life crazy with the "What ifs?"
Part of my transformation has been to become an active thinker about what I would do with my health routine if I couldn't actually do it for reason of injury. (Denise offers some great advice on this, by the way.) I have tried to get a mindset instilled with my thinking, so that if something happens, I won't fall apart, but move forward towards healing and transformation. Here's my plan: 1. Continue to eat clean 2. Work all part of my body that can still be worked 3. Be creative with cardio and getting my heart rate up. 4. Expect healing and believe that I am doing everything I can to move towards it. Yesterday I walked 8, had no problem at all, but today, my left knee is hurting quite a bit-and a LBWO is awaiting me. I will do what I can, with what I have, where I am. My transformation is still happening, even if my dang knee doesn't want to cooperate today. What's your game plan for injury? We don't have to dwell on the "What if," but a good mindset will keep us heading in the right direction if something should happen to upset our routine. Amy

I think it is a great plan and now you are mentioning problems with your knee in another post. I was talking to Clarissa the other day and I was having knee issues so I didn't want to put tension on my bike - She suggested I use weights for upper body while ridin (exefcise bike) to help get my heart rate more elevated since I couldn't use the tension. I am back to using tension again now that my knee is better.
For my parrticular issue I didn't want to quit my challenge so I got to a physical therapist. I am not supposed to do treadmill with elevation, Lunges, squats, or leg extensions. I have a whole series of exercise to work the legs that don't injure the problem areas.

I have a sister that used to do the what if's out loud and my life is so hard and drove all of us crazy until I was in a car accident with my husband. We t-boned a semi. @ 60. We're alive! When you look at someone else in a worse situation you can more appreciate where you're at. And, when I was in that bed. A vegetable, broken up. BUT ALIVE I said I have 2 friends that have incurable diseases, they're worse off than me. AND, God allowed me and my husband to live to raise my 6 children with no major lasting results other than scars and sore joints. When I read your title I thought this would be about being accident prone which I am. More of an issue since the accident. I hit myself all the time. If you didn't know me you'd think that I was being beaten. But, it's just my body that hurries faster than my mind. You'll change your mindset when you look at others and how you can help them. kennie

Amy, I don't so much have a game plan for injury, however I do worry about asthma -I've had to cut 2 cardio sessions short since I started BFL because it will get to a point where ONE MORE STEP will be to the ER, which will require loads of medicine and instructions to NOT exercise for several days. So my plan has been, take that extra 45 seconds or a minute when the breathing gets too tight and let my lungs relax and get back to it.
I know MANY will continue to tell me it's in my head and that I don't push hard enough, if you saw me do cardio, I push myself. But I'm not going to kill myself. I would rather miss 2 mins of cardio than a week of workouts. |

That was a great post! I have been doing "planning" daily for my adjustments that are needed. I have always suffered from shin splints, running and jumping are just not my thang! I have an over developed anterior tib muscle that just PULLS on my bone causing great pain. So I have to be very conscious of how I run (Foot placement and what not). The end of last week I literally felt like I had stress fractures in my shins so I started icing and doing more stretching and planning. SInce I can't quite do what I want to do I have to work around it. So today I will just take a long - fast paced hike with my girls - no running. And later just ride my bike at high intensity. I just have to adjust until they feel better.
We can always work around injuries....where there is a will there is a way! Thanks for this post! |

Mellie,
Where there is a PLAN there is a way! I consider myself very positive, and what I hoped to accomplish through this post is to get people to have a mindset for when/if something happens to them. Time and time again I have seen people fall from their transformation journey because of an injury that could have most likely been worked through, maybe not the way they did before, but they could still work through it-I am included in this list of people! Mellie, you inspire me so-thank-you. God has gifted you with the ability to lift others up-and I am learning from you. Amy

Hi Amy,
Great thread. I say as preventive measure, one has to strengthen their immune system, and of course the abvious ways to do that are proper exercise and proper eating habits. I also read the ingredients sections of what I eat. Many hate to be told about that but the fact of the matter if one "eats healthy" and properly works out on one hand, and on the other, eats presevervatives, colorants and chemicals that in the long term as well as short term work to run down and empovrish their defenses, then what good does working out or eating healty do them anyway? Also, strengthening one's link to Christ, my newly found way is fasting. Just not long ago I did a fast (it was supposed to last 3 weeks but I had to break it after the end of the 6th day due to the daily workouts that literally wiped me). I prayed tremondously during that fast. Just couple of days ago, I had this frightening pain that kicked in in the middle of the night (I'd rather not disclose it's orgin). I called out to Christ once and the pain IMMEDIATELY STOPPED!!!! I just could not believe it. I think one's link to Him strengthen through fasting more than anything else. I now truly believe that. I intend to do another fast (LMAO) to just thank Him for this one agggain ![]() . And I think working to keep Christ close by is The Gate to being protected from injuries or otherwise.
