Prescription Drug Addiction

Prescription drug addiction affects one in five individuals.Yes, it is a staggering number, but it has become a major battle in the addiction war. If you are struggling with this problem, you are not alone.I have been in recovery for opiate dependency since September 2007, and have turned my life around. Now I work as an advocate with The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,The National Alliance of Advocates for Buprenorphine Treatment, and The National Institute on Drug Abuse.I am also in college to become an addiction's counselor. The hardest step is the first, if you want to talk, I am here.

Shel,

I hope you can join us tonight in the addiction recovery group chat. We would love to have you. I will have 3 years sobriety 8-20 from an addiction to opiates, so I bet we would have a lot in common.

Thanks

Coach

How wonderful to have someone in the community that can help and relate to others with such a serious addiction. Congratulations on beating that addiction and then taking the time, care and love to help others survive theirs. I have felt the pain of addiction in smoking and the control these substances can have over us.

Although, I have seen first hand what this PDA can have on others. I had a close friend who had come into my home, went through our cabinets and took prescription meds that I had in there from years ago. I'm sure they were expired, but she took them anyway. It is very important that we discard those in our homes because you would be amazed how many people do that, ones that you would least suspect. I had also been written a prescription for Vicodan when I was having some issues and I decided I wasn't going to fill it. She knew through conversation that I had it and went into a frenzy that I needed to fill it and take it if the Dr. prescribed it. She went so far as to go to my home, get it and fill it for me. The next day she showed up at work very "out of it". I didn't put it together. The next day she showed up at my house when I was out shopping. I came home and she was coming out of the house and said I needed to use the restroom, she couldn't stay and had to run. I went into the house and the prescription was in the middle of the counter. I opened the bottle and 9 out of 15 pills were gone. I called her husband and we set up an intervention. It was very difficult. She was very angry, still in denial, but we did work through it. After 2 years, she is now clean.
I think it is wonderful you are going to dedicate your life to help these people.
Thank You.
