Should i make Adjustments to Meal Plan for diabetes?

Hi,
I went out and bought the book yesterday since my fiancee's dr recommended he follow the program.
Fiancee has type 2 diabetes, is overweight and can't exercise due to foot ulcer/surgery that won't heal. Everytime he starts walking for exercise the foot problems flare up so foot dr has said no exercise that involves the feet.
His weight lose will have to be mostly by diet.
I am wondering about the meal plans that seem to have rice or potatoes as part of the meal so often.I thought this was a no no for diabetics since they are so high on the GI index.
Do you adjust and choose a lower GI index carb? What do the rest of you do?
Also we're big on a green salad for dinner with our meal? Is it a problem to add that?
Thanks,
DSWS

Hello my friend nice to meet you. I find that with use diabetics is tough sometimes to find the ideal meal. I know some people react better with a more of a vegan diet and others a low Carb Diet. Has your husband gone and see a nutritionist? The eating for life program works for me but I can do my cardio work out so I am very different.

Maybe other community members here can give you some suggestions also. Please do not lose hope and always continue to ask questions. We are always here for you and your family.

I am a diabetic with high blood pressure. I have tweeked the my daily intake of foods to better watch my carbs. I want to make sure that my carbs are more complex. So that I have less rice, potatoes, and pasta. My first week I included the pasta and patotoes. I want to lose more consistantly. I find that when I eat foods higher in potsissum I have less problems with joint cramps. So I appreciate learning to balance your food. It seems like I should know this since I have been a diabetic for almost 20 years

I know Dusty will have some good guidance for you. I am glad you found his forum. New potatoes, whole wheat pasta and brown rice are all lower thank you might think on the glycemic index (54. 54 and 50 respectively). These actually are complex carbs. I do agree that adding more fibrous carbs like broccoli, cauliflower (both 10-15 on the GI scale) are important. The key with complex carbs like pasta and brown rice is portion control. I have found that when I can limit my portions and focus on getting high quality protein and lots of vegetables, I feel more satisfied with fewer hunger cravings, and more importantly, I just feel better. Weight loss is certainly one indication that you are getting diet under control, but far from the only measure. Keep focusing on regulating blood sugar, and FEELING better. The weight loss will come as a byproduct of healthy eating. I am so very proud of you Cynthia for getting out here and asking questions and taking charge of your transformation. Dusty is the best--you're in good hands in his forum --Tim

PS Here is a link to the GI index. http://www.glycemicindex.com/ As you know my mother has diabetes, and we have found that we can usually find close substitutes (i.e. new potatoes) with much lower GI than their high GI counterparts. My mom limits potatoes altogether, but it is possible to include them if you make the right choices (and right combinations).
