What 10 signs of Progress am I seeing from my first 6 weeks?
1-Legs, thighs & chest are measuring smaller.
2-I have more healthy eating days than not.
3-I am dealing with work stress better and not taking it home with me.
4-I am able to use meditation to calm my mood.
5-I have gone from 10 minute miles to 9-9.5 minute miles.
6-I lost 1 pound, not thrilled with that number, but at least I am maintaining.
7-My closets are clean, I have been procrastinating clearing them out.
8-I have had a positive mindset many more days than not.
9-I have created new friendships by reaching out more.
10-I have people from my “real life” checking in with me, sharing their fitness goals and plans and wanting to stay accountable with me. Very cool to be doing this with people I have known for a long time that are changing their mindset.

Exercise
What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me
Training for my half marathon is pushing me to run more than normal, which in turn is making it easier to run and is building my endurance. I always have to have physical events/goals so that I push myself more than normal.

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?
I recently switched up my weightlifting routines because I was getting a little burned out on P90X. So I have switched back to Body for Life style lifting for month or two.

Nutrition
What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?
Planning my meals each week. Even if I don’t follow them exactly, it gets me thinking about what to get at the store and what to prepare and have ready each day.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?
I have to stop buying my trigger foods when I shop. For some reason I always think I am stronger and can just leave it alone until my free day and clearly I am not since I keep falling back into the same trap.

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?
I truly am seeing that when I share my stories and struggles that is does help others. People I don’t normally discuss health and fitness with are contacting me and telling me that I am making a difference in their lives. So I take that very seriously and have been making extra sure to sincerely compliment people when they tell me what they are doing or when they post something about their efforts on T.com or Facebook. Feedback and support is so important to people, especially those just starting out that need reassurance that their efforts are not going by unnoticed.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?
Falling off the wagon mid-week. I feel so great on Mondays and even Sunday night when I am planning my week, but then I don’t see much movement on the scale or something comes up and I wonder why I am wasting all of my energy when nothing is really changing. I know that is not a good mindset and that is why I try to connect with people who make me look at things differently. Mainly-not looking at what I did wrong during the day/week but what I am doing RIGHT – which is more times than not!!

How do I feel about my Transformation?
I think I should be doing much better with my weightloss, but honestly my lack of weightloss reflects my efforts. I talk myself into thinking I am working out more and get hungrier, but I could be making better choices and not buying trigger foods hoping that I will just miraculously not be tempted. I know I am an emotional eater and I know if it’s not there I won’t eat it and the longer I don’t eat it, the easier it will be to abstain from it. Yet I keep falling back into the same vicious cycle. So as usual, I am hard on myself, but that’s only because I know I can do better. J

What 10 signs of Progress am I seeing from my first 6 weeks?
1- Eating healthy and exercising is becoming a way of life
.
2- I am gentle with myself when I slip up, rather than getting frustrated.
3-
My example has motivated my husband to start exercising
.
4- I sleep much better
.
5- I am able to make a decision and to act on it without being paralyzed by fear.
6- I have realized that I matter, that I am worthy of being loved.
7-
I am making a difference in the lives of at least 2 people who have looked to me for their transformations.
8-
My weight has dropped 2 lbs. It’s not much, but I am happy with it
.
9- I have learned that healthy spaces also include my workplace, which I have realized is unhealthy for me and so I will do what I have to do in order to find harmony and balance in my life.
10-
I have realized that true happiness is in the giving, not receiving

What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me?

Exercise has become a habit now and so it is not hard to get to it. I have a little space in the basement with weights, a treadmill and a tv; it has become one of my favorite places.

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?
I need to buy some 15 lb weights because some of my exercises are not a challenge anymore. I need to up the weight. Also I’ve basically been doing the same exercises for many months. Now its time to incorporate some new things.

Also in my cardio, I need to start putting more intensity; I am capable of more.

What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?

I am enjoying eating healthily; when I cook from EFL, the family can enjoy the meals as well. Planning has become second nature; and I always have lots of healthy foods in the house.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?

I still have some marshmallows and chocolate in the house, and during weak moments that is what I go for. I need to get them out of here so that I won’t be tempted. Also, I find that often I don’t eat enough for my meals and then I get hungry too soon. I will have to make sure that my three main meals are enough to carry me through

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?

The biggest one was this past week when something happened at work that was the last straw in my mind. As I wrestled with staying or leaving, someone pointed out that in the healthy spaces makeover, the workplace counts too. I had only thought of my home as a healthy space to be taken care of. So I have decided to leave my job, and since the decision has been made, I already feel lighter in mind and spirit.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?

Staying on plan when my emotions get in the way. I have gained and lost the same two pounds over and over. I think I need to work more on my steps so that I can gain peace of mind. I have noticed that my weight loss has reached a plateau with my increasing disgruntledness over work related things. I am hoping that with the above epiphany and my acting on it, that my weight will start to drop again.

How do I feel about my Transformation?
So far I am happy to have spent the past six weeks in the group; getting to ‘know’ everyone has been a bit of a challenge; I felt kind of shy in the beginning, things are getting better now. I am quite sure that without the group and the structure, I would have gained instead of just reaching a plateau.
As far as my transformation is concerned, I feel that I am still waiting for it to happen. I am trying to tell myself, ‘progress, not perfection’.

Exercise

What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me?

Cardio is working for me when it is intense and I get outside and do it.

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?

When I could not drop the weight I stopped lifting weights. It is time to bring it back into the plan. (Thanks Michael for letting me know)

Nutrition

What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?

My prepared six meals a day. I do my best to get them ready for the week.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?

When I get really busy I don't eat my snacks or a few times miss lunch. I need to focus on staying on track on the busy days.

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?

I noticed that when I skipped the meals my weight would fluctuate and the bloating would happen. When I stayed on track the weight would drop and I was not so tired. It taught me that my body is wanting the nutrition and the 6 meals work.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?

Working long hours this week and too tired to put in the workouts. It has only been two days but it is enough for me to feel like I am slacking.

How do I feel about my Transformation?

I am loving how aware I am on what it takes to get results. I am happier and so determined to give it my all. It has been 6 weeks but for me the last three have been where the eye openers have happened. Due to my body type, the plan I had at the beginning was not working so I had to adjust it after week four when no weight was dropped. After a doctor visit and many test and some studying, I figured out what I needed to do and it has been working. I am not going through peri-menopause like I thought. I am needing to work out twice as hard and increase the workouts. I had to find out what works for me. I am just happy that the answer came on what to do and my test results are great. IT'S FULL STEAM AHEAD!

What 10 signs of Progress am I seeing from my first 6 weeks?

1-
I am further embracing my uniqueness

2-
I've improved my ability to communicate more effectively from the heart

3-
'ALL or NOTHING' is progressively being replaced by a 'Just Take the Next Step' approach.

4-
Self Awareness continues to heighten. I see my strengths and praise God. I see my weaknesses and reach for help when needed. I work to improve in all areas to be more of a blessing to those around me.

5-
I see more of the good and less of the undesirable.

6-
I am giving of my time, talents and resources

7-
Celebrating the success of others has become important to me. I want for others what I wish for myself.

8-
Greater value is placed upon what I can give as opposed to what I can get.

9-
This quest for Self-Mastery is pushing me to greater heights.

10-
Feeling more spiritually connected

Exercise

What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me?

Since shifting away from heavy doses of endurance training and devoting more attention to strength training I have felt better overall balance and have been getting more rest.

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?

I must be continually mindful to avoid stagnation. Keeping it fresh is important for long term sustainability.

Nutrition

What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?

Since watching 'Hungry for Change' and other nutrition related videos I have shifted even further toward an organic approach to nutrition, incorporating juicing and alternate proteins that are not animal based.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?

Meal frequency has not been spot on. I tend to miss a meal or two a day which impacts my energy, mood and body composition.

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?

Releasing attachments has taken on new meaning for me as I help lead others through the minefield. I desire for all to succeed but understand that our individual Journeys are our own and we must each be accountable to this process of continuous self improvement. We will all make great progress to that end if we simply take a step each day in the right direction.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?

Time management and being careful not to take on too much. At times I feel myself drawn to over commit. When I do this, I immediately feel the anxiety and know that I need to delegate more to clear my plate.

How do I feel about my Transformation?

I know that I can do better, but I also know that I've been giving my best. I am pleased with my progress in all areas and look forward to seeing what can be accomplished moving forward.

Notice the sunburn on the shoulders from our most recent canyoneering trip ... lol even after using sunscreen.

I have to figure out how to do the side by side pictures. Not a lot of progress but I know my clothes are fitting looser and I have lost body fat and gained about 6 pounds of muscle. I have lost about 7 pounds and all of it is fat. So I am happy with maintaining and firming up.

My 6-Week Progress Summary

What 10 signs of Progress am I seeing from my first 6 weeks?
1-
I have faced adversity but have not given up.

2-
I have been flexible in my delivery but I have stuck with my basic plan and process.

3-
I continue to experiment with a nutritional plans to find the best way to fuel my body and I feel that Primal Blueprint program by Mark Sission has some real promise.

4-
For much of this challenge, I have felt exceptionally good.

5-
I took a leap of faith and bought Vibram FiveFinger shoes which have been surprisingly comfortable and served me well in my workouts.

6-
I have worked on positivity and self love.

7-
I feel stronger and more able to face life and live well.

8-
With much thought and an opportunistic offer, I have decided to re-focus my workouts on functional strength and high intensity cardio workouts. I am doing Insanity, BodyPump and trainer-lead bootcamp. I am excited to see where this takes me.

9-
I have faced sickness twice in this challenge so far and have not used this an excuse. I continue to put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward.

10-
I have not seen much statistical progress but I know where I can make improvements and feel like I am on the right path.

Exercise

What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me?

I have been pushing my intensity. I have added lots of diversity with a nice mix of trainer-lead/group fitness (for motivation) and self-directed high intensity workouts (showing dedication).

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?

Last week I decided to have a little more focus on what i enjoy rather than what I have been told is important. I have switched to Insanity as my base program. This means a little less weight/resistance training but I really like the program and the motivation is helping me achieve.

Nutrition

What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?

The Primal Blueprint has been a positive program for me to follow for my nutrition. I have fallen off it a bit in the last two weeks (resulting in my weight gains recently). When I eat grain and sugar free, I feel so very good and strong. I will use this as my foundation for the next 12 weeks.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?

I have allowed grains, sugar and "deserve it" to enter back into my diet in the last two weeks. We have had some good times but the outcome has been indigestion, weight gain and upset stomach. Re-focus on Primal-type eating is key to my success.

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?

I think I may have some real reactions to grains and I know from a long love-hate relationship with sugar, that I need to modify my eating to keep feeling good and making healthy progress. My mind has changed from "whole grains" as being good for me to being a negative influence on my health. Finding a way to eat this way long term is a key for my success.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?

Eating has always been my challenge. Consistency has been my long term issue. I feel so very, very good following primal eating. I need to continue to celebrate the good feeling more than the short term gratification that I get from grains and sugar. I will master this, with time and practice.

How do I feel about my Transformation?
I love the focus and dedication that comes from following a path. It is a process and I am learning every day what works for me. I feel confident that I am finding answers to my long term health. I am confident that I am making positive strides.

My stats are essentially unchanged, though my weight is 155, down from a high of 158. The rest are the same.

Exercise
What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?
I have not been able to swim because of the slow healing of my incision from surgery on my hand. I need to get back into at least once a week swimming to prepare for the triathlon.

Nutrition
What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?
Eating vegetarian more than meat is really helping me.

How much I have made Transformation a daily part of my existence.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?

How do I feel about my Transformation?
My Transformation is a lifestyle change that makes me feel good overall. I have to hold on to the concept of progress not perfection, and at times that is very hard to do when I have worked so hard for so long and see such slow weight loss.

6 Week Results

What 10 signs of Progress am I seeing from my first 6 weeks?

1- Exercise, I do it now no matter what the day’s circumstances are.
2- I steer clear of all fast food restaurants and buffets.
3- My muscles and strength have improved substantially.
4- My food choices are smarter and healthier.
5-I pray more.
6- I am still trying after the dreaded 4 week syndrome.
7-I am educating myself more about health and exercise.
8-I try to share more of myself with others.
9- I am more self aware.
10-Did I mention I pray more?

Exercise

What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me?

Doing it daily no matter what my schedule looks like, the day is not
done until the exercise is. I mix weight lifting with cardio 2 days then
cardio only for 2 days, rinse and repeat.

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?

Time off for rest, I do not allow for any, I exercise 7 days a week
1 hour to 1.5 hours a day. I may be over training but my results don't say that.

Nutrition

What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?

Salads I eat them 5 days a week for lunch at work. I try to eat
organic meats, fruits and vegetables when I can obtain them. I
use green food and whey shakes to supplement. I juice when I can.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?

Portion control even though its good food, too much is not.
Trying trial and error to lose weight but retain muscle gain, it seems
I have been more on the error side then trial.

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?

That I have so far to go to change my behavior and get better
anger management changes in my life. I seem to be struggling
with this Transformation stuff and constantly wanting to give
up hope for myself of any real significant change to happen
for me. I am a beautiful person I just seem to not project that image.
You would think at my age wisdom would start to kick in at some point.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?

Finding the recipe for weight loss, again I am missing something in
the equation and not getting the results I am expecting. I am also
having a time management challenge, but not letting that be an excuse to stagnate.

How do I feel about my Transformation?

I have not seen the results I would have expected considering
the amount of exercise I do and the food changes I have made.
I seem to be disappointed that the Transformation I am striving
so hard for always is out of reach. I have though pushed through
and not given up, like in the past and when I resorted to completely
trashing myself and doing just the opposite behavior.

Waist 46 --- 43 3/4 --- Lost 2 1/4 inches
Big Waist (baby tire) 50 --- 47 ---- Lost 3 inches

R Bicep 13 3/4 --- 13 --- Lost 3/4 inches
Weight 212 --- 204 ---- Lost 8 pounds

2- I am focused on living each day to the fullest which includes taking care of myself.

3- I feel in control and balanced which I have not felt in a long time.

4- I am making wise choices not 100% of the time but I am aware that I am making choices and focusing on the best for me.

5- I am not making this an all or nothing thing. It is about my progress.

6- I am enjoying the little things in life because one day I will look back and realize they were the big things. Like taking my kiddo to the skate park or taking my oldest out driving so she can get her license.

7- I have had a positive attitude. I am focusing my attention on the here and now.

8- I have watched less tv Yeah!

9- I pray and meditate every day. I did this before but I have noticed I feel more of a connection now.

10- I can not describe it really but I feel empowered. Lifting weights make me feel "Worth" living. It makes me feel as if I can do anything. It is a powerful feeling that makes me smile every day. I have even converted my cardio to be strength based with body weighted moves such as burpees, push ups, duck walks, boxing, ect. I have found a new passion for cardio now.

Exercise

What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me? Working out in the morning right after I take my youngest to school. It is on my calendar and it is the most important thing on my schedule everyday.

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted? I have recently adjusted my cardio workout to be more strength based because I love that portion more. So far it is working.

Nutrition

What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me? Eating 5 to 6 times a day. This keeps my bingeing at bay because I am eating at regular intervals.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted? Eating out. I just need to eat out less. I want this to be a lifestyle so I need to learn how to look at menus and nutrition and make my decision ahead of time.

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks? That if I am consistent results will follow.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far? Figuring out how to put my pictures in the thread. I am such a goober when it comes to technology.

How do I feel about my Transformation? After looking at my pictures I was somewhat disappointed because I honestly can not see any progress. In my clothes the only difference I notice is I can wear my jeans and breathe. But after taking my measurements I am seeing the numbers and am knowing it is working! The feeling of balance and control though have made the most impact for me thus far. It is like lifting a big ole weight off my shoulders.

My BEFORE and AFTERS are on my profile. Thank you for looking at my profile since I can't figure it out.

4- Trying to join phone calls
5- Celebrating success of others
6- Participating in spirit challenges
7- Aware of how gratefulness affects my attitude
8- Regaining strength in my UBWO

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?
Intensity
Nutrition
What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?
Planning and having healthy foods in the kitchen
What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?
I plan, but many times I don't actually eat my meals due to timing and stress
What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?
I am still allowing situations out of my control in our life to affect my progress. I still tend to put others needs (or what I perceive as their need) ahead of my own.
I try to realize that the one thing I can control is what I eat and how I exercise.
What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?
Our job situation has changed dramatically and I am not handling it well. My husband has been a stellar example of sticking with his plan, eating and exercise, through all of this adversity so I know that I could be doing the same, but mentally I am struggling. My focus and commitment are lacking due to stress.
How do I feel about my Transformation?
I am not pleased with my 6 week results. I go through the motions half heartedly. I could give up, but I will not. I will look at this assignment and move forward. A lot of progress could yet be to come in the next 12 weeks. Posting these pictures, and I apologize they are sideways, reminds me of what could have been. I actually was up a couple pounds from starting weight (after a free day), but I am happy to be maintaining. I had a successful year last year and I will strive to get back in the groove. My husband is my greatest inspiration and nemesis at the same time...LOL! But I have to do this for me! Many of you are great inspirations as well and each of you bring something of your own to the group that makes this place a wonderful place to be! I believe transformation and I will see the benefits again!

Weight - 147 same
Chest 36.5 + 1
neck 13 -0.5
waist 33.5 -2 !!
arm 10.5 -0.5
leg 20 -0.5

WOW! Now this is why we take measurments

What 10 signs of Progress am I seeing from my first 6 weeks?

1- loss of 3.5 inches and a 1 inch gain in my chest. I'm very pleased with that since I didn't expect much with my weight staying the same.

2- My focus on progress. I was ok with my weight staying the same. I am proud of continuing to make progress in building healthy habits that are my new lifestyle. I felt much like a rubber band before, determined to to it all at once and eventually snapping back....feeling like maybe I could never do it. I threw that rubber band away.

3- My work on forgiveness.

4- Apoligizing and working on making it right.

5- My work on accepting myself.

6- taking a leap of faith when before I would have gotten tangled up in fear.

7- making most of the conference calls & participating! I seriously thought I would just listen for a long time. I really enjoy connecting with the Mastery group in the calls.

8- accepting others as my coach. I might not want the negativity or difficulity in my life but I can choose to grow from it instead of letting it effect me.

9- Opening myself up to what is and letting life flow. I can't force certain things to happen no matter how stubborn I am!!

10- Staying committed to Transforming

Exercise

What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me?

I have a variety of ways to get in a workout available to me. I have a treadmill and a recumbent bike when the weather is too cold. I love getting on the Centennial trail and hiking outdoors - both of which are seconds from me. I also can do yoga watching youtube videos. Another favorite, I can lift weights with Nathan.

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?

PLANNING!
Eating so I can workout....it simply doesn't work if I'm starving.
Need to learn how to lift weights by myself.

Nutrition

What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?

My willingness to continue to try new foods. Foods that will nurish me and make me feel good. Actually eating the foods that are good for me that I like. I'm continuing to work on becoming a kitchen magician - even if some meals don't turn out.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?

PLANNING!
I need to push myself more to cook and try new recipies.

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?

I've had several very personal epiphanies during these last 6 weeks. Realizing that decieving myself and trying to make events fit my view only hurt me, it didn't make it true. Starting the work on forgiving other people, forgiving myself, asking for forgiveness, making it right & realizing why all of it is so important. I finally feel like the past is being realeased. That the work I have to do from now on is mine and mine alone, it's not because anyone or anything else.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?

Right at this moment I'd have to say nutrition. My diet is extremely limited. We reccently started getting our daughters help for their quirks from their doctor. Funny thing, the nurse we're working with called it exactly that - quirks. While I know that a label is just a label and well, it's a starting point and it makes it much easier to try to explain to others. The quirks are genetic & they got it from me. Our nurse wrote up a letter for our 8 year old daughters teacher and it she used the term Sensory Processing Dysfunction (SPD). There might be other labels that apply, different doctors can attach different labels, again - just a starting point to get my girls the help they need. Anyhow SPD is any of your senses can be hyper or hypo active. Mostly the girls and I are hypersensitive. Nutrition is a challenge because there are texture adversions - for example I can't stand the feel of onions in my mouth but I like them, to get around that I throw salsa in the blender. My husband has created a little in joke - our 8 yr old has the worst of the oral and taste/texture adversions of our girls & once she claimed she didn't want to eat the corn because it tickeled her teeth. So now, anytime we're talking about our hypersensitivity he'll say I know I know the corn tickeles your teeth. lol I'm glad I have him to help me find the humor in things. The nurse also suggested that I might have ADD. I hardly ever went to the doctor growing up so I have no clue. This all is normal for me lol.

How do I feel about my Transformation?

WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG?!?!?!!!!!

(Have to get the kids ready for school, will come back before 10 )

I know I have been quite absent the last few weeks, but I was so anxious to catch up with everyone. I have take the time to read all these, and I just want to say how proud I am of all of you!

This process takes a lot of effort, and sometimes the inner change has to happen before the real change shows on the outside, so be strong and stick with it. Don't ever think you efforts are a waste, because it takes lots of healthy changes to add up to big results....remember to focus on progress not perfection. :-)

I see some great progress and some huge inner changes happening! Keep up the great work!

What 10 signs of Progress am I seeing from my first 6 weeks?

1-

I've lost 10+ lbs. My Base & Summit weight was 195 on a scale at the doctor's office. My recent low on my home scale is 179.5.

2-

I'm getting out and doing things I have not done for close to 10 years, like serious caving trips. I'm doing new things, too, like canyoneering and rappel training. I'm pushing my comfort zone every day.

3-

I'm not anxious about perfection in my results. I'm more attached to making the right decisions about food and exercise and being conscious of my actions and decisions.

4-

I feel a personal connection to the T-com community and a responsibility to stay connected and share my journey.

5-

The "little things" don't really get to me. I still react, but I forget completely about them minutes later. I've noticed I release tension well lately.

6-

Losing my friend Tim suddenly did not negatively impact my nutrition or exercise habits in a major way. Even while processing heavy emotions I remained on course with eating and got outdoors and celebrated life. There was no emotional eating, and I was not saddened into lethargy.

7-

I know I'm getting leaner because I see new veins in my arms almost daily.

8-

My calves have Vibramocity!

9-

I feel I am having a positive influence on those around me and making a real difference in peoples' lives.

10-

The most prominent feeling I have in my life right now is a combination of calm acceptance of the present and enthusiasm / anticipation for the future.

Exercise

What parts of my exercise plan are really working for me?

I feel I am doing well at finding creative ways to get out and move and push my limits. I've done 5-25 workouts, Body-for-LIFE sets and a great variety of challenging outdoor activities. I am bringing the intensity in a number of ways.

What parts of my exercise plan may need to be adjusted?

Lately it feels like my exercise is sort of "rocky" and hard to measure. Am I training myself evenly, or are my workouts uneven? Am I allowing too much time for recovery, or is listening to my body the right way to go? If I'm doing what I enjoy and enjoying what I do, does it even matter that my workouts are not mechanical and measured? Aren't the structured exercise routines simply training for what I'm actually doing right now?

I think I'm on the right path, but it's hard to know if I have the right balance. I suppose time will tell and I'll learn when I have enough feedback from my results. I will stay nimble and adjust where I feel I need adjustment.

Nutrition

What parts of my nutrition plan are really working for me?

On the days that I'm home and have a pretty structured routine I tend to do very well on my eating. I have a lot of established healthy habits now, and I find it natural to eat cleanly. I don't really worry about nutrition; it mostly takes care of itself.

What parts of my nutrition plan may need to be adjusted?

On the days I'm out exploring canyons or caves, however, eating cleanly is a real challenge. It's impractical to take foods that will spoil in the heat or won't hold up to getting crushed in a pack. I need food that is waterproof, crush-proof, won't leave crumbs in a cave, gives me enough energy to keep going for hours and is still nutrient dense. I tend to end up with nutrition bars, because I can seal them in a ziploc and if they get splashed with muddy water they're still edible thanks to their wrappers. I don't get nearly enough fresh veggies on these days.

I'm actively working on finding better solutions to eat well on these trips. One thing that works fairly well is to bring cooler with healthy stuff and leave it in my truck--that gives me better options for immediately before and after my trip, at least. I have thoughts of packaging meals with my food-saver so that I can have something better than bars mid-trip.

What epiphanies have I had throughout these last 6 weeks?

One thing I've realized is that I've been holding myself back from being a leader and teacher. Getting back into caving has made me realize how much experience I have and how much I have to share with others who don't know that world so well. In the past I was content to be a member on someone else's trips, go where someone else wanted to go, and let someone else lead the way. I'm feeling more and more that the "old guard" is getting older and I'm stepping into the role of passing down knowledge to the next generation. One example of this was sharing my rope-ascending system for caving with a group of experienced canyoneers. Even though I felt pretty new and green when it came to rope work in canyons, it was clear I had plenty to offer from my years of experience with rope work in caves.

What have been my biggest challenges or obstacles so far?

I have had trouble staying on top of my assignment work and staying as connected as I would like to be with the online community. My sabbatical has opened so many doors for me that I have been swept up in getting outdoors, meeting new people, shopping for new equipment and helping Autumn to build the experience and skills to come join me on technical outings. The assignments have been an afterthought, and I'm only checking in when I can squeeze the time out between all of these other commitments.

Healthy spaces have suffered as well. I have not been around the house enough to help keep it in order, and I need to dedicate more time and energy to keeping my home base a place of rejuvenation and renewal.

How do I feel about my Transformation?

I'm pretty thrilled that I am doing things like 17-hour caving trips again. I feel more engaged with *real life* than I have in a very long time. I hope that what I share here with the T-com community stands as an example of how much wonder there is to experience when you're healthy enough to step outside and go new places, experience new things and overcome obstacles that would have stopped you in your tracks without attempting to overcome them had you not made the decision to be healthy and strong. I hope my story speaks of adventure and opportunity to those who follow it.
