Feeling Sluggish and Drained...what's up?

Just a quick question...I have been doing a kick-boxing class on Saturdays for the last 9 months. Now that I am in my third week of my Transformation process, I am having a hard time keeping up with everyone else. I thought the opposite would happen. On a good note, my recovery time seems faster, especially after some grueling exercises. I am just at a loss about the fact that I need to take breaks during my class when I never had to do that before. I am also feeling nauseous during class. HELP!

Sounds like you may need to add a few more calories(carbs) before your class. Maybe one of the trainers(Clara) may have more help. Cindy

It could be a variety of issues. Improper progression( when a novice tries to train like an old pro) instead of slowly progressing. You could suffer from lack of nutrients to support the rigor of training, There are so many possible factors that the list could grow quite large. You said you have been doing this 9 months so that might throw out the lack of progression theory unless your body wasn't ready to move on. You said that the training is grueling and that you get nauseous, maybe it is too intense for you at the moment. How is your nutritonal protocol? do you suffer from iron deficiencies etc....All I can say is really listen to your body and train safe, safeguard your precious health. I hope you find a solution that works for you.( take all replies from a message board with a grain of salt and consult your physican to make sure you do not have any underlying health problems)

Also, what supplements are you currently taking? Before, during, and after? Are you taking any at all?
The more information we have the better we can help.

There are a wide range of possibilities. Couple things to know getting started.

1-how has your workout program changed since you started your transformation?
2- how has your food intake changed? (either up or down)
3- are you doing kickboxing in a fasted state? if yes, were you doing it fasted for the last 9 months?

We can start with those questions and see if we can isolate this out a bit for you.

just thought I'd throw this out there. Whenever I am feeling that particular way it's because I am dehydrated. One of many, many possibilities so make sure you are drinking lots of water!!!!

Thank you so much for your feedback. I spoke with a trainer yesterday and she suspects that I may be over doing it. In addition to my 4/2 routine, I'm in karate two to three times a week. (Something I also did before I started my Transformation). The kickboxing class is one of my four cardio days. According to this trainer, something has to give.

I do not take any supplements other than my protein shakes (3 times a day). I drink tons of water and I eat six times a day. I do most of my workouts in a fasted state, including kickboxing.

I am thinking of training and continuing karate but not the kickboxing class. What say you?

My guess is you’re over working yourself. If your doing your Karate as your 3x's a week as your BF workouts cardio then maybe not BUT if your adding that onto those cardios then I'd say your overloading and your bod can't catch up. Maybe drop the cardios for just the Karate’s and see what that does. I also do martial training BUT I don't do cardio AND that as their fairly grueling in and of themselves. Good Luck!!! Mike

You have several options. First one is to drop the kickboxing. The second is to keep it in there, but start doing that workout after a meal. See how you feel. I would do a little prioritizing. Which do you prefer, the martial arts or the cardio. Pick one.

Either way, a little cutting back on the volume is going to help.

Perhaps you are over training. Maybe cut back a little to give your body time to recuperate. Maybe you need to eat more too. Just a thought.

Thanks so much! I love my karate classes too much to give up. I'm going to keep that up as well as the kickboxing. But, I will drop my cardio workouts and see what happens. I am at week 4 today so I guess it is time to switch up the routine anyway! You've all been helpful. I am so very gracious.

Thanks Mike. You are right. Martial arts is quite enough to get the blood going. I am not willing to give that up. I have come too far. Plus, I get to do it with my kids and husband. The family that trains together, stays together...take care.

I know I have been having a hard time concentrating on my weight lifting days and on some cardio days. When this happens, I try to change up my routine and add some new exercises that challenge the same muscle groups. On my cardio days, I have been doing more interval/circuit training and this has brought refreshment to my workouts.

Add more carbs to your diet 20 minutes prior to your workout. Also, make sure to eat after your workout. Have some protein with carbs and a tad of sugar (Right Light).
