Doing it the "Right" way

Like many others I was looking for something...

Watching for the new book, I Googled Bill's name one day not so long ago and found Transformation.com. ... my journey began...

Mr Mighty Marty checked on me a while back as I'd been absent for a while and I explained to him that I was TDY up to our CRTC (Combat Readiness Training Course) in Alpena MI since the 3rd and had just returned.

During this course I worked as an inspector observing and grading our folks from Charleston AFB SC. The exercise put them through their paces of deployment (getting out of Dodge in a hurry), employment (setting up at a remote bare base location; Alpena) and redeployment (going home) complete with C-17 Globemasters carrying all the personnel and equipment needed to set up an entire Air Force installation from literally nothing in the middle of nowhere.

I was the lucky guy who drew the 12pm to midnight split shift while everyone else either worked days or nights 6-6. I thought this was lucky as I'd be able to workout and get 3 of my 6 meals in before going on my shift. Man, was I wrong...

Day one I landed in Charleston SC at 2pm and was in uniform and "observing" by 4pm. Still not bad as I thought I'd be done by midnight. Wrong. I worked until the day shift came on at 0600 the next morning. But I did grab a meal and make it to the gym for my cardio for the day before getting some sleep. Then back up a few hours later to go in at noon.

Day two started at noon, again thinking I'd be done at midnight. Wrong again as an incident that I happened onto kept me there until 0400. Then I went back to my room to pack for my 0600 flight. But I did manage to squeeze out some pushups and bench dips using the chairs in the room before catching my flight on a C-17.

I arrived in Alpena MI on Day 3 around 0800 and checked into my room. Think of a basic training type setting here... that's how the CRTC is configured. Tiny twin beds, two to a room with a small desk in between, two wall lockers and a small dorm sized fridge. Community bathrooms with community showers... you get the idea. I managed to steal away to Walmart to fill the tiny fridge with wraps and pre-cooked chicken/vacuum packed tuna/salmon and my new favorite cottage cheese & yogurt with fresh blue berrys.

This brings me to my main reason for this (intendly short... sorry) post. The schedule and facilities didn't exactly lend themselves to this new lifestyle as I'm sure you can imagine. 12 hour shifts quickly turned into 16-18 hour days and I found my self fitting in my cardio in the mornings and my weight training as late/early as 1am as there was a small weight room/closet with some cardio and weights (DBs up to 40lbs) and a few machines.

Anyway, I was reminded of a very valuable lesson: To be successful you have to MAKE the time to honor your commitments. I kept repeating Bill's "1440 minutes in a day" mantra and made the time to work out. I continually focus on another quote from him for motivation that states simply "wishing you the strength to succeed." (It's on my bathroom mirror!)

Doing it the "Right" way: There is absolutely no way in those training conditions that I could have stayed on track with my nutrition had it not been for the Right shakes! My ABUs (Airman Battle Uniform) have cargo pockets on the thighs and every day I'd pack two vanilla and two chocolate in each leg before heading out.

As much as I tried, the schedule just didn't allow me to get more than one or two meals from my room fridge and the shakes not only "fed the machine" every 3 hours, I'm convinced that without them and the energy from feeding my body regularly, that there is no way this 41-year old Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) could have kept up the pace!!

The younger troops were even asking if I ever slept and wondered how I had so much energy as they arrived at and departed their 12 hour shifts! LOL So, thank you for making me look good as the "mentor that never sleeps" in the Airmen's eyes and thank you for this opportunity called Transformation.

An opportunity to not only get back in shape and to look and FEEL great again, but an opportunity to overcome health issues and to live a long, HAPPY life with my beautiful bride and our two young sons. They deserve a husband and father who honors his commitments and who is happy and healthy for the rest of THEIR lives!

For the motivation YOU'VE given me to get off my butt and commit to this lifestyle (again) I could never thank you enough... you've inspired me to be better than I am... something that was much needed as I look back... I just needed the push to get me started again. Thank you!

Right Light and Protein+!

I don't know where I'd be without the Right products!

Busy here again doing accountability of all our Air Force reservists between hurricanes… long days stuck in the office but I know I can always "feed the machine" when I need too with Right Light and Protein+!

For Gustav we had to account for over 12,800 troops... AND their families! That 12,800 doesn't include the family members, so you can only guess how crazy it is in here when we're trying to account for so many people in an affected area and we have to up-channel updated reports every 2 hours, 24 hours a day until we reach 100%. That really makes those last two people important in a hurry let me tell ya! LOL

The bigger the hurricane/storm... the bigger the affected area... the more folks we have to account for... And these reservists can either live or be stationed in those areas or be on leave or TDY to those areas. For example, we had one guy assigned to Carswell AFB TX who lived in Alaska! And another who lived in TX but was assigned to Russia! We have to account for them all in every possible situation/scenario...

Wanted to share a quick update… Day 3 of week 8 and I’m down 19lbs!!! From 240lbs at my worst to 221lbs this morning! I know I’ll drop another before weeks end too!

My long term goal is to drop 40lbs… short term goals are 10lbs per month to attain that goal. Looks like I’m right on track! (c:]

Thank you for all your support thus far my friends, coaches, heroes and mentors!

Being the Change!

V/R,

Ty

p.s. As a cool visual our baby boy Mason is 3 months old today and he weighs a whoppin’ 18lbs 12oz already! The same weight I just lost!

Ty!!! Great post. Very very smart to keep those pockets filled with the "RIGHT" stuff......I was so excited.....the UPS or FEDEX actually delivered mine one of the days when I still did not have power from GUSTAV...Like a kid in a candy shop!

Also thought it was interesting...the nutritional stats of one of those MREs is CRAZY!!!! The spaghetti one had something like 1300 cals, 180 g of carb, some large amount of sodium....but ONLY 13 g of protien! I DID not eat one! LOL!

When my last big box came my wife was so surprised she said "Bill Phillips is gonna jump outta that thing!" LOL

I hear you on the MREs... back in 94 when I deployed to Rwanda they forced us to eat 3 per day... Yuk!
