WOOT! Naomi!!

I'm thinkin', after seeing the topo maps of this ride, that I may have to split the 15 miles over two days.

Dave - how did you fuel up the night before your big ride in that awful heat index? Do you start electrolytes the night before? I've been having sideaches/nausea on the longer runs - has to be my pre-workout eating.....(hehe, my longer runs are only 5-6 miles. I have a way to go, before the Denver half!!)

Getting the ol' familiar pre-race jitters. Haven't seen many of my endurance friends since last summer. Really looking forward to getting away from the workplace drama, into the mountains.

Lisa, what is this race going to look like for u? I believe you said you wanted to run 15 of the 30 miles?! Is this a race you do with your horse? Will you get to ride the other 15 miles? Or are all 30 miles on foot? Is this an organized event? Or just something you set for yourself?
LOL, sorry, just curious ~Naomi

Ah, Naomi, thanks for asking.

An endurance race is an organized, timed event, where horse and rider cover 30 to 100 miles cross country. There's a time limit, depending on the distance. Many riders get off and walk/run, on steep downhills, or to give the horse a break. Vet Checks are every 15-20 miles, where you have to meet criteria before moving on.

I've never been athletic enough to be the perfect partner for Ku, I kept gaining weight and just couldn't do anymore...last fall, I gave it up. Until Transformation came along.....

This particular race is 30 miles on Saturday and another 30 on Sunday, and (thinking about the Denver 1/2, inspired by crazy Dave's 165 mile bike ride, and because Ku isn't in perfect race condition), I got this crazy notion to run/walk 15 miles of it in segments. Ku is trained to jog behind me, loose, and to pull me up the really steep stuff (me holding his tail!)....it really is a partnership. Ku and I have a few thousand miles together, he's pretty special.

Thanks for making me smile.

Lisa, I don't change much on my diet or liquids the night before. I think the meal before the event is critical. I eat 2 hours before, and almost always include a protein shake. I will also do a couple of eggs and some fresh fruit, usually a banana and maybe 2 depending on distance. Liquids, probably the most critical part. I usually drink some water 2 hours before. 30 before I drink 16 oz of something that has MALTODEXTRINS,(electrolytes) gatorade does not have any and it does have sugar. My 2 favorites are Cytomax from Cytosport and Iron Man from Power Bar. Both come in powder form and mix in 16 ozs of water. Both are low sodium and no fruit sucrose, or aspartame. They really do help support energy levels .180 cals in 16 oz. Can't worry about cals on long events. Cytomax is sweet and Iron man tones the flavors way down. I like both and they have a variety of flavors. Iron Man can be purchased in bottles like gatorade as well. I drank 6 of them on the ride plus all the water and 2 NOS energy drinks. A normal ride I would have had 2 or maybe 3. Gained 4lbs on a 9 hour ride 90 degree day so I was able to stay hydrated. It was gone the next day.

The air is dry in UT , don't wait until your thirsty to start drinking. My goal while riding is to drink 16 to 32 oz every hour, depending on conditions. 32 being hot and humid, 16 being a minmum for any condition. I try to drink about every 15 min. Eat something every hour. Bananas are great so are bars and energy chews. If you have questions email me or call me sometime. Good luck, and go for that century ride as well.

Dave -thanks!!!! I'm printing and saving this. Protein before runs lately make me ill. I need to allow 2 hours, as you suggested. I've been "hitting the wall" - - just too low on fuel. I also do cytomax (and Gu), but likely not enough, at proper intervals.

Sheesh, how did I eat pancakes and sausage 20 miles into ragbrai, porkchops at 40, sweet corn and hard lemonade at 50? Sure thinking about the riders this week.

have a great day - stay cool!

Naomi, I would gladly send 2 to you!!

(BTW - a good friend is moving to Fort Worth soon - we'll help transport her horses. Won't be long until I'll be down....where are you?)

+++++++++++++++++++++++

We're packing, Ku is pacing the fence, and will be all night. He knows the drill, and loves to compete. Our neighbors will be babysitting (ie, spoiling) the rest of "the kids" while we're gone. Bill hasn't stopped working tonight - he's happy putzing, getting things in order, likes everything "just so." Me, I'm a slob - I tend to throw 'n go. I am so darn lucky.

This year, I can pack light and I "get to" wear bike shorts and tank tops. No more baggie, hot clothes on a hot ride. T helped me accept that my misshapen chest is now a badge of honor, that I'm no longer ashamed of. Hey, being "flat" makes riding and running that much more enjoyable!

okay - 'nuf procrastinating.

I was just on the RAGBRAI web site. Starts in 1 day 21 hrs and 56 min. Jealousy comes to mind. 12,000 riders partying and eating there way for 450 miles across Iowa for 7 days. I will be thinking of the Waffle Man, Mr. Porkchop, Farmboys, and of course Beekmans home made Ice Cream, and all the pie that anyone can imagine. It will be on my mind all next week!!!!!!!!

Dave - I thought it was THIS week - hope the heat breaks for them. Though it's been 11 years for me, I start to salivate this time of year, for the comraderie, music, food. The burn is gone by Day 3, and at weeks end, dipping the front tire in Ol' Miss is kind of bittersweet.

Carin - you have endured so much pain, anguish and frustration, with more patience and grace that I could imagine. I hope you get the answers you seek today! We're pulling out in a few minutes! I'll take tons of photos. Have a great weekend, all!

Thank you, Team LLKN+?! And Dave--can't wait to see you in that cheerleader skirt, doing front splits, pompoms in each hand.

Lisa, I would love the chance to meet you in real life! I'm still quite a way away though. 5 hours or so south. I live just to the south of San Antonio. Any chance that you'll be here around Aug 4th? There's going to be a T.com get together that evening in Austin. I am really trying to make that.... Danielle(Finline), and Carin, and maybe Jamie? Are all planning on being there too! It would Rock if you could be there too?! ~Naomi

Enjoying a nice quiet saturday morning. I hear footsteps running on the treadmill in the basement. I think she is about to hit the 10 mile mark. Grinding it out with Eminem.

Ok, spirit challenge complete!!!! I can't imagine what the other Lisa is going through these next 2 days!!! I ran 10 miles first thing this morning (treadmill ) in 93:07 and then around noon I decided to get it over with and ran the remaining 5 miles 46:38. I need to take a break from running anything over 5 miles for the next week!!! Best of luck and hoping you both stay safe, Lisa and Ku!!!!! Lisa R

Wow! Lisa R! I am amazed!! And oh so impressed I wanted to split up 10 miles over Sat and Sunday. For Sat I got out on my long rock driveway and did 3 1/2 miles. Although I think I took as long as you did for your ten miles! Lol... Tomorrow evening I am planning on getting back out there, and doing some more, but I don't know if I will reach any more then seven. That is still Really huge for me though my farthest up to this point has only been 3.1 miles at a time.
Good night all! ~Naomi

Namoi, that is AWESOME !!! You have to stick within a reasonable limit for yourself so you do not push into an injury!! I had planned to break up the 10 mile run, but I felt good enough that I just kept going. But I don't plan anymore runs longer than 5 or 6.4 for a while : ) Way to go!!!

Lisa-you are a MACHINE!!! I have never run 10 miles before & on a treadmill-I don't know how you do it!

I finished my 3rd run this morning. So ran 3-8k's (I like saying it in kilometers cause it sounds like more ) I did a little over 5 miles each time. Not the fastest, but between 10-11 minute miles, so I am happy with that because I ran about twice as many miles as I would have on a normal weekend.

15 miles - DONE

LisaR, Kathy, Naomi - - - - We DID IT!!! THANK YOU--thoughts of you kept me going. It was hot, dirty, windy, buggy. Ku stepped on me a few times (I'm too slow for him!), and we got lost once or twice. And, it was a BLAST!!

Saturday - 10 miles run - 20 miles ride (and still came in 7th place)
Today - two 2 1/2 miles runs. Scribed for vets - hot, hard work.

I'm beat. Truly beat. Burnt to a crisp. Sheepskin burns from riding in shorts. Legs are like lead. But NO pain pills, no ibuprofen this time. No net calorie loss, due to too much good camp food!!

I WAAAAY underestimated the effect of running in 8500' elevation (home is at 4000), the rough ground and climbs. I didn't ask Ku to go out Day 2, due to a persistent nosebleed (hopefully just due to altitude change).

Many didn't recognize me at first, especially in shorts, and SURE didn't expect me to run 1/3 of the distance. Made many new friends - 1) folks eager to meet the crazy old lady and 2) ex-runners-turned-riders, willing to share tips, and encouragement.

I really cannot imagine doing a 1/2 marathon, let alone a full one. But, that's still the plan, along with continued weight loss and muscle gain.

G'night!
Lisa

Awesome picture! Congratulations on all your accomplishments!!! I was concerned of running a 1/2 marathon in Denver at altitude!! We did live out there for a while and I didn't really experience any problem adjusting...but I'm older now : ) You need some rest and relaxation!!! You are quite the inspiration! Lisa R
