I Am

I have been fortunate in my life to accomplish a lot of good things and make a good living. I want to leave a positive legacy behind. I want to know that I left this world a better place than I found it. I served as a member of the Colorado State House of Representatives for three terms. I served as Majority Whip and loved being in a leadership position. I felt my legacy was as Champion of the underdog and champion of "lost causes." I would take on worthwhile legislation that others had taken and failed to pass. I could figure out new opportunities and solutions for passage. Many times my bills would fail initially but I would I would keep figuring out another approach until I could get it passed. They said Colorado was a "football" town and would never approve a tax for a baseball only stadium. Well guess what, we did it and baseball has been a great asset for Colorado. Most recently I was the Director of the Colorado Division of Housing. We were the first in the nation to create a statewide foreclosure prevention task force. While Colorado's foreclosure filings are still one of the highest in the nation, our completed foreclosures with the assistance of our foreclosure prevention hotline keep our numbers in the bottom half of the nation. Colorado, until this year was one of only 2 states in the nation that had no warranty of habitability for rental tenants. Poor and handicapped tenants had no re-couse when a landlord allowed their unit to deteriorate to no heat, water or basic health, life and safety issues. Today they do. It was a hard and long battle, but well worth it. Homelessness is another significant problem in this state. Safe, decent and affordable housing is fundemental to everyone and everything we do. I loved my job and we were recognized nationwide as an innovator in the housing arena. I would go to work everyday with joy in my heart. Until I encountered a new boss. The boss from hell. I quit my six figure job one month ago, one year from retirement because it was killing me physically and emotionally. It is time for me to rebuild the inside and the outside. It is time for me to heal and improve myself so that I can once again be that teacher and helper for others.

To me, Transformation Means

It means not only positive visible changes on the outside, but positive visible changes on the inside. I'm at a place right now of trying to heal emotionally. As I struggled to deal with a new boss who devalued my work and the work of all my employees I used food as a salve to ease the pain. Exercise was out of the question as I would come home eat dinner and go straight to bed, exhausted from the great amount of stress. I've gained 50 pounds and feel and look tired and defeated. I want the old me back, the champion of the underdog, who can figure out solutions and has energy to give and never give up until the job is complete.
